Job summary

Pierce County’s Surface Water Management (SWM) Division seeks a senior civil engineer to lead teams delivering capital projects, overseeing engineering design, environmental permitting, right of way issues, construction management, and project oversight.

You will apply expertise in floodplains, water resources, water quality, and urban stormwater to guide internal staff and contractors using tools like AutoCAD and GIS.

Qualifications

• Nine years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
• ABET-accredited bachelor’s program in civil engineering; substitution for experience on a year-for-year basis, up to four years.
• Professional Engineers licensed in another state must obtain licensure by the State of Washington within six months of employment.
• A resume and cover letter are required for this position.
• A valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

• Manages assigned resources to complete work and secure approval of major engineering programs using planning and management methods.
• Provides leadership and direction to staff responsible for implementing a major engineering program; delegates authority appropriately.
• Schedules and assigns employees; approves or denies leave requests.
• Trains staff and provides engineering guidance; makes recommendations to County officials.
• Assists in recruitment and selection; conducts final interviews; recommends hires.
• Completes reviews and evaluations of subordinate staff; initiates disciplinary action when necessary; responds to grievances.
