Job summary

First Point Group in Houston is seeking a Lead Civil Designer to drive civil design and drafting for complex projects. You will lead teams, produce 2D/3D CAD models and drawings, and support design estimates and work plans.

The role requires strong leadership, extensive experience in earthwork, drainage and road design, and proficiency with Civil 3D or OpenRoads. You will coordinate with engineering and construction teams to ensure quality and compliance.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Lead Civil Designer to collaborate on planning, developing, coordinating, and reviewing civil design work for complex projects. The successful candidate will lead civil design and drafting activities, produce detailed 2D and 3D CAD models and construction drawings, facilitate technical discussions, and support design estimates and work plans.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the work of civil designers and drafters, including preparation of layouts, study drawings, detailed 2D/3D CAD models, and construction drawings.
• Develop designs for complex civil engineering systems, including earthwork, drainage, and road design, with minimal supervision.
• Assist with development of detailed scale models and design documentation.
• Prepare or assist with material requisitions and bid evaluations.
• Review civil design work for compliance with approved standards, quality requirements, safety considerations, and constructability.
• Participate in constructability reviews and provide technical recommendations.
• Develop design and drafting procedures to standardize project design efforts.
• Coordinate and participate in jobsite visits as required to resolve technical issues and interpret drawings and project documentation.
• Review civil design scope changes and provide input to project management.
• Ensure civil system designs comply with applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards.
• Collaborate with engineering, construction, project management, and other technical disciplines to support successful project execution.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Design, or a related discipline, or international equivalent.
• 10–13 years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree, or 14–17 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Strong experience with 3D modeling of site earthwork, drainage, roads, and related civil infrastructure.
• Expert-level proficiency with civil modeling software such as Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley OpenRoads Designer.
• Experience preparing quantity takeoffs for civil materials.
• Strong understanding of civil design and drafting standards.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, codes, and construction documentation.
• Strong coordination, communication, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.
• Experience leading or coordinating civil designers and drafters on complex projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working on large-scale infrastructure, industrial, energy, manufacturing, or other complex construction projects.
• Experience supporting constructability reviews and field/site coordination.
• Familiarity with applicable civil engineering codes, regulations, and industry standards.
• Strong experience working in multidisciplinary project environments.
