Lead Carpenter

The campus enjoys incredible vistas of the Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau with views that span across several states. The region is widely known as an outdoor recreational paradise for campers, boaters, cyclists, climbers, cavers and hikers, all this while being conveniently located within two hours of Atlanta, Nashville and Knoxville.


Summary/Objectives

The Lead Carpenter is responsible to the Supervisor of Maintenance & Operations to maintain and repair all varieties of carpentry related items on college property as well as design and build items as needed.


Essential Functions

  1. Design, purchase, build and maintain, and replace all structural facets of a physical building from bottom to top. (floor systems, walls, ceilings, attic spaces, roofing)
  2. Repair/refurbish aspects of furniture as assigned. Repair or rebuild a building commercial hardware, millwork, and fenestration. (doors/door jambs, windows, etc.)
  3. Supervise student employees assigned to the Carpentry Shop, giving them instruction on safe and responsible work practices, and maintain the shop and any work areas in a clean and orderly fashion. Stock and maintain the carpentry shop.
  4. Respond to after work hours call-in for emergencies in your work scope, or to assist others.
  5. Monitor outside contractors as assigned.
  6. Secure, repair or replace broken or unserviceable windows or glass panes on campus.
  7. Fulfill such other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance & Operations.

  • Perform and supervise in accordance with safety standards, work in potentially hazardous situations involving chemicals, hardwood dust, a sewage treatment plant, heights on ladders, confined crawl spaces, and high speed cutting and finishing machines.
  • Ability to relate to others in a cooperative and mature Christian manner with good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to drive college vehicles for errands, special events, and shuttle service.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and lifts, including but not limited to an articulating boom lift, backhoe, and tractors.
  • Responsible for the safe use of riggings, hoist, ladders, scaffolding, lifts.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma.
  • Three years experience in carpentry.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability.
  • Leadership and organizational skills.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Professional skills in use of all woodworking equipment.
  • Knowledge/experience in all cabinetry and wood construction methods and practices.
  • Working knowledge of Google applications.

Physical Work Environment:

  • This role is expected to be performed on campus unless otherwise directed or arranged for and operates primarily around the campus grounds, in campus facilities and workshops as well as occasionally in a professional office environment, using standard office and shop equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and other job-related tools and technology.
  • May be required to work in potentially hazardous situations/environments involving chemicals, solvents, vapors, heights on ladders and elevated work platforms and confined crawl spaces and where environmental conditions include wet, humid, hot and cold conditions, noise and vibration.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors and have sufficient hearing to work safely and cooperatively.
  • The role may require substantial periods of time standing and/or walking.
  • Classified as medium strength requirements, the role requires frequent lifting, moving maneuvering or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) up to but rarely over 30 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas and conversation by means of the spoken and written word; needs to be fluent and conversant using the English language.
  • Generally, days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Slightly altered shifts, infrequent extra hours, evening and weekend work may be required as job duties and urgent/emergency response demands.
  • Travel is not required for this position except for training and professional development.
