Position Information:

Reporting to the Skilled Crafts Trades Supervisor in the Facilities Services Maintenance Department, the Lead Carpenter performs journey-level work related to the construction, repair, restoration, and installation of building structures, flooring, furniture, etc. Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor's absence and acts as a subject matter expert who provides leadership to team members. The Lead Carpenter is responsible for operating and training others on: equipment, methods, and materials used to perform various carpentry projects throughout the University of California, Riverside campus. This position may work independently or as part of a team and responds to emergency situations during or after hours to resolve immediate concerns and correct safety issues. Maintains a positive attitude for the team and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

The full salary range for the Lead Carpenter is $44.91 - $50.56 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.


Requirements:

  1. Educational Requirements:
  2. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Completion of a certified apprenticeship program. (Preferred)
  1. Experience Requirements:
  2. 5 years of journey-level experience as a carpenter performing specialized fine carpentry, furniture/cabinet making, framing, wood working and joinery, and/or completion of a certified apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  3. 1 year of experience leading, guiding, and/or supervising a team.
  4. Experience in safely using and operating hand and power tools common to all skilled trades.

  2. Shift Work (hours outside standard Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM work hours).
  3. Must possess or obtain a Valid CA Driver License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles and be placed on the DMV pull list.
  4. Must wear University issued ID badge and uniform.
  5. Overtime
  6. Hired candidate must successfully pass a background check prior to appointment start date.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Ability to work with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary customer service.
  2. Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities.
  3. Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  4. Knowledge and ability to perform skilled carpentry work. Skilled use and maintaining of carpentry tools and test equipment.
  5. Ability to effectively communicate and understand safety regulations and hazards. Knowledge of common safety procedures, regulations, and applicable codes.
  6. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  7. Ability to estimate time, methods, and materials needed from construction documents. Ability to read and understand documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blueprints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
  8. Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to work occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.
  9. Knowledge of proper handling procedures of asbestos, mold, and lead paint. Ability to follow safety precautions and utilize appropriate safety devices, equipment, and gear to safely perform duties.
  10. Knowledge and ability to prepare layouts, build and install building structures, set forms, fabricate, repair and install cabinetry, perform post and beam construction, and all facets of rough and finish work.
  11. Ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, and emergency requests.
  12. Ability to work from varying heights of up to 25 feet above grade. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Ability to perform repetitive lifting, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching. Ability to load, carry, move, and manipulate various building materials.
  13. Ability to withstand frequent exposure to extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work outdoors in extreme and inclement weather conditions. Ability to work around and be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells, dangerous, and/or hazardous substances.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems.
  2. Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Design CAD 2, etc.).

  2. Lead Responsibilities: Leads, guides, and clarifies instructions. Assigns work orders for the maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, modification, and inspection of service requests. Acts as a subject matter expert.
  3. Communication & Customer Service: Serves as liaison with clients and relays their needs to the appropriate department or supervisor.
