Job summary

Child & Family Service in Hawaii is seeking a Lead Caregiver - OAHU FT to join our Early Head Start team. This role leads planning and implementation of a developmentally appropriate daily curriculum for infants and toddlers, while guiding classroom staff and volunteers.

Under the supervision of the EHS Program Director, you will ensure a nurturing learning environment, oversee routines, and mentor a collaborative team to help families and children thrive.

Qualifications

  • High school plus 2 years of college in a specialized field or apprenticeship program.
  • CDA and 24 months full-time experience with children under 5 in licensed care.
  • Patch registry qualifications must be Lead Caregiver Qualified.
  • Valid Hawaii driver’s license and clean driving record may be required.
  • Criminal background check required.

Under the direction of the EHS Program Director, the Early Head Start Lead Caregiver plays a vital leadership role in creating a nurturing, engaging, and high‑quality learning environment for infants and toddlers. This position leads the planning and implementation of a developmentally appropriate daily curriculum while overseeing all classroom operations.

The Lead Caregiver uses sound judgment and initiative to ensure the smooth, efficient operation of the classroom, providing guidance and mentorship to classroom staff and volunteers. From organizing daily activities to supervising classroom routines, this role is hands‑on, collaborative, and deeply impactful shaping both early childhood experiences and a strong, supportive team culture.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • High school plus additional training equal to 2 years of college, which requires knowledge of a specialized field or may lead to licensing, (data processing, accounting, human services), or formalized apprenticeship program. For example, certified substance abuse counselor, bookkeeper, etc.
  • Other Preferred: High School Diploma, or its equivalent and Child Development Associate (CDA) and24 months FT experience working with children under 5 years of age in a licensed group care setting of which 12 months shall have been with children under 36 months of age.

Or 2 months FT experience working with children under 5 years of age in a licensed group care setting of which 12 months shall have been with children under 36 months of age.

**Patch registry qualifications must be listed as Lead Caregiver Qualified

EXPERIENCE

  • Over two years, up to and including four years.
  • Other (Specify): On-going monthly in-service training with topics focusing around but not limited to Child Development, Health & Safety, challenging behaviors, curriculum, working with parents etc. Experience gathered pre-B.A. degree is acceptable.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Must have excellent communication, organization, supervision and problem-solving skills, flexibility, and willingness to work as a team member.
  • Knowledge of and Experience with children ages 0-3 and their families.

OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license and a clear driver's abstract and continued employment may be contingent on maintaining a clear driver’s abstract
  • This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license, a clear driver's abstract, and willingness to travel in personal vehicle on an as-needed basis throughout the island
  • This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license, a clear driver's abstract, and use of personal vehicle to transport participants, as needed, as well as a willingness to travel in personal vehicle on an as-needed basis throughout the island.
