Job summary

James Madison University Facilities Management seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator to maintain the campus landscaping and infrastructure. The regular schedule is Monday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m., with a summer schedule adjustment and overtime as needed for events and weather.

The role requires operating backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, street sweepers, and trailers, while safely applying pesticides and leading summer workers. This position is essential to university operations.

Qualifications

• Experience operating heavy landscaping equipment.
• Ability to lead summer workers.
• Willingness to work overtime for events and weather coverage.

Responsibilities

• Operates backhoe, tractors, dump trucks, street sweepers and trailers for landscaping and transporting materials.
• Operates safely a variety of heavy equipment to maintain campus aesthetics.
• Uses pesticides safely as directed to create an attractive environment with minimal chemical use.
• Assists in other landscaping duties including maintaining campus signage and grounds.
• Leads summer workers.
• Operates snow removal equipment as needed.
• Responsible for work during home football games.
• Position is essential to university operations and may require work during emergencies.
