Job summary

University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Finance and Business Affairs seeks a Lead Business Systems Analyst to manage financial data access, plan and implement system improvements, and mentor staff.

The Lead Business Systems Analyst manages financial data access on behalf of UNCW . This position plans, designs, examines, analyzes, develops, implements, administers, and monitors program processes, operation systems and efficient business, and financial systems. In addition to project managing and leading implementation teams, this position works directly with vendor project managers, consultants, and vendor support on system implementations, process review, research and resolution. Additionally, this position supervises one full-time tech support technician and a part-time employee and is responsible for the staff development, coaching, and mentoring of each team member.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and managing project plans, for system improvements and developing test plans for system upgrades.
  • Designing, analyzing, documenting, administering, and monitoring business processes on behalf of the Finance Section and UNCW .
  • Serving as a subject matter expert for business processes and systems that are related to the Finance Section, particularly for all accounting and accounting related processes and systems and Budget Office processes and systems.
  • Assisting the Director of Financial Systems by serving as the lead for complex, large and/or other assigned initiatives, directives, programs, projects, and/or support work on behalf of the Finance Section at UNCW .
  • Serving as a team lead for the Financial Systems department when assigned by the Director of Financial Systems, and/or when the Director is not available.
  • Conducting market research on overall accounting processes and technologies that are, or could be, used at UNCW to ensure that UNCW maintains an awareness of the marketplace and the higher education industry.
  • Managing several of the business systems for the Finance Section \ including the vendor relationship for ongoing support, maintenance, new design, testing, data integration definition, and overall availability during UNCW business hours.
  • Assisting with ensuring that accounting systems are compliant with all UNCW , UNCSO , state, and federal rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Conducting annual audits of financial data security access in accordance with all UNCW , UNCSO , state, and federal applicable rules, regulations, laws, and guidelines.
  • Serving as the primary data steward for financial data access at UNCW on behalf of the Business Affairs division and the Finance Section of UNCW .
  • Supporting the Finance Section websites in a primary and backup role as defined by UNCW’s current web platform, including content design, writing, editing, website updates, website creation, website and content archival, and website integration using forms and other approved technologies at UNCW .
  • This position is part of the team supporting the Finance Training Program and will participate in authoring and updating content as well as manage system/program administration.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment with 3 or more years of experience; OR
  • Masters degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment with 2 or more years of experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Strong knowledge of financial services technology, systems, and processes
  • Experience in Higher Education fund accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner Systems
  • Experience with data security to understand business applicability of access
  • Experience with system requirements definition, analysis, design, and testing
  • Experience with user support and training
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting, including writing queries against a data set (e.g., databases, report writing in SQL )
  • Advanced trouble shooting experience with business processes, user processes, systems, and data integration

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Business Affairs Division oversees a broad range of administrative and operational functions at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, including procurement, financial affairs, physical resources, capital management, safety and security services, building management and construction, information technology services, and auxiliary services.
Within this division, the Finance team supports the University’s mission and strategic goals by delivering key financial services efficiently and effectively to students and the broader campus community. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance (AVCF) leads the university’s financial operations, which include the Controller’s Office (Financial Reporting, General Accounting, Fixed Assets, Payroll, Accounts Payable, Travel, Non-Student Billing), as well as Student Accounts and Cashiers, Budget, Financial Systems, Tax, Financial Analytics, and Purchasing.
The Financial Systems unit supports the technology infrastructure that enables the university’s financial operations. The team provides consultant, implementation, integration, analytical and data security services for the university’s financial, eCommerce, travel and procurement systems and users. These systems currently include Ellucian Banner Finance, AR, Payroll and HR, e-Print, Evisions, Jaggaer, Emburse, SSRS , and TouchNet. The services provided by Financial Systems ensure optimal system integration, efficient business processes, reliable financial reporting, and strong internal controls over financial data.
