Position Overview

Department: Pitt County Schools Transportation Department

Position Description

Job Title: Lead Driver

Reports to: Transportation Coordinator

Supervises: Site Drivers, Bus Drivers, Safety Assistants

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Communicate directions and assignments from the Transportation Coordinator and/or Director to site drivers, bus drivers, and safety assistants regarding their bus routes.
  2. Provide leadership and mentoring to promote a positive and effective team environment.
  3. Serve as a substitute driver or safety assistant as needed.
  4. Assist in dispatching fleet operations.
  5. Develop and deliver training in all transportation operation phases.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently
  • Valid NC CDL with passenger and school bus endorsements
  • Valid NC School Bus Certification
  • Pass Federal DOT physical examination
  • Enrolled in FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
  • Preferred: Experience as a Lead Driver with knowledge of NC Transportation and Education Codes

Major Responsibilities
  1. Oversee and mentor bus crews, perform duties of a regular and EC driver and safety assistant.
  2. Supervise safe transportation procedures ensuring compliance with laws and policies.
  3. Develop and conduct training for bus staff.
  4. Perform vehicle inspections and preventive maintenance.
  5. Handle complaints professionally and seek resolutions.
  6. Implement student management techniques for safety.
  7. Investigate workplace injuries and vehicle accidents.
  8. Manage routing and scheduling, including updates and parent communication.
  9. Evaluate routes and personnel, making approved adjustments.
  10. Assist with state reporting data and provide backup transportation support.
  11. Participate in training and comply with drug testing policies.
  12. Maintain a positive attitude and perform other duties as assigned.

School buses, related transportation equipment, computer and routing software, copier, telephone, bus technology.

Includes paperwork, physical activity (lifting, bending, etc.), outdoor conditions, and stress management in a fast-paced environment.
