Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Senior Structural/Bridge Engineer for the Lansing or Detroit, MI offices to grow technical knowledge and project management on bridge projects. You will work with our Bridge Team on concept development, planning, design, and construction of load‑bearing structures, ensuring quality and safety.

The role emphasizes mentoring staff, coordinating with teams, and contributing to technical proposals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • P.E. registration in Michigan and ability to acquire in other states.
  • 5 to 10 years of post‑education experience in Structural Engineering with an emphasis on bridges.
  • Strong technical skills in bridge design.
  • Ability to lead design teams and deliver high-quality projects.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Self-leadership with attention to detail and multi‑tasking in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS.
  • Willingness to travel for project needs.
  • Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • 40‑Hour OSHA Training (HAZWOPER) preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR training desired.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, plan development tasks and perform structural analysis for Michigan highway structures.
  • Maintain project scope, design changes, and project budget/schedule.
  • Mentoring and development of staff and others on similar work.
  • Coordinate closely with project team and perform QC/QA reviews.
  • Contribute to and/or lead technical proposals.
  • Represent WSP at professional society meetings and conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This Opportunity

This position will provide you with the opportunity to grow your technical knowledge of structural engineering and develop your project management experience on bridge projects. It will also provide you with the opportunity to be involved in exciting projects with our Bridge Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients’ objectives and solves their challenges.

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Structural/Bridge Engineer for our Lansing or Detroit MI offices. This position is best suited for an engineer who is seeking an opportunity to work within a team‑focused local office, with the resources and support of a large world‑wide engineering firm. Tasks may include assisting with concept development, planning, design, and construction of load‑bearing structures or structural elements, substantiating reports and documentation regarding material, installations, and construction specifications, and ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality. Your Impact
  • Lead design, plan development tasks and perform structural analysis and design with a concentration on Michigan highway structures
  • Actively maintain project scope, design changes and project budget and schedule while assigned to projects
  • Mentoring, training and development of staff and others performing similar work
  • Ability to provide close coordination with others on the project as well as independent QC/QA reviews
  • Work with marketing staff to contribute to and/or lead technical proposals
  • Representing WSP at targeted professional society meetings, including presenting at conferences as appropriate and approved
  • Other duties as assigned
Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
  • P.E. registration in Michigan and ability to acquire in other states
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant post‑education experience in Structural Engineering with an emphasis on bridges
  • Strong technical skills and background in bridge design
  • Accustomed to working in a team environment on challenging projects and leading design teams in delivering high quality projects
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non‑engineering audience
  • Highly capable self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline‑specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS), technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering
  • 40‑Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with MDOT Design Standards
  • Experience serving as the lead engineer or with managing small to mid‑size projects
