Job summary

Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland seeks a Preparator to support and lead installations of the permanent collection and exhibitions. You will manage objects in storage, optimize space, and prepare works for travel on loan, coordinating with the Registration team.

Reporting to the Head Preparator, you will supervise art handling teams, assist with environmental monitoring, and ensure timely completion of tasks to the highest standard.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Architecture, Art History, Museum Studies, or closely related program from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum of five years professional experience as art handler, fabricator, carpenter, or A/V tech in museum/gallery or related settings.
• Expertise in current museum standards for care and handling of objects including hanging, rigging, tethering, security hardware, conditioning, transport.
• Excellent dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
• Ability to manage projects and work with little oversight.

Responsibilities

• Serve on exhibition project teams, coordinate installation/deinstallation, lead contract art handling teams.
• Develop methods for installation and deinstallation of artworks, including multimedia works.
• Design and fabricate mounts for display or long-term storage, aligning with architectural vision.
• Operate heavy equipment for installation and deinstallation tasks.
• Collaborate with Registration and Conservation on crates, packing, and crating for movement.
• Assist in periodic and annual inventory of the collections.
• Create installation instructions and artwork manuals in the collection database.
• Maintain updated artwork locations and storage solutions.
