What does Thomson Reuters Labs do? We experiment, build, and deliver. We support the organization and our customers through applied research in informational retrieval and natural language processing. We collaborate closely with product and domain experts to identify solutions that meet user needs and are technically feasible. Our team is designing next-generation search technology for Legal and Tax Professionals globally, driving AI innovation for Thomson Reuters’ Core Research Products, including Westlaw, Practical Law, and Checkpoint.

About The Role

As a Lead Applied Scientist, you will:

• Innovate and lead solution delivery as a technical leader.
• Be fully accountable for all research deliverables.
• Provide input on long-term AI strategy to business and Labs leadership.
• Lead stakeholder engagement with UX, Product, and Tech teams.
• Develop in-depth knowledge of customer problems and data.
• Maintain scientific and technical expertise in relevant areas through product deliverables, publications, and IP.
• Mentor and coach other scientists and engineers on best practices.

About You

You’re a fit if your background includes:

• PhD in a relevant discipline or Master’s with comparable experience.
• 7+ years of experience building IR/NLP systems for commercial applications.
• Experience writing production code and managing software delivery.
• Proven ability to translate complex problems into AI solutions.
• Experience scaling and leading in an applied research environment.
• Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Experience collaborating with Product, Engineering, and Business stakeholders in an agile setting.
• Publications in venues like ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, or KDD (Preferred).

In the US, the base salary range is $171,500 - $318,500, with potential for bonuses based on performance. Compensation is determined by experience, skills, and location.
