Job summary

Amazon AWS is seeking a Senior Applied Scientist for EC2 Onhand Capacity Optimization to design, implement, and scale optimization algorithms. You will work with the Onhand Packing Science team to improve EC2 capacity usage across the pathway from modelling to deployment.

Lead junior scientists, collaborate with engineers and product managers, and communicate results that influence engineering investments and cloud compute offerings.

Qualifications

• PhD in operations research, applied mathematics, theoretical computer science, or equivalent.
• 6+ years of relevant academic research or industry experience in developing algorithms.
• Publications in refereed academic journals or conference.
• Experience in prototyping and developing software in Python, C++, Java.
• Comfortable with SQL and large-scale datasets.
• Excellent writing skills to document the models and analyses and for presenting business cases with results/conclusions.
• Experience leading large projects across cross functional teams.
• Experience collaborating with engineers to deliver novel scientific solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and scale decision‑making algorithms to optimize EC2 capacity.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to move from modelling to production.
• Mentor junior scientists and review work for impact and validity.
• Communicate results to guide engineering investments and business direction.
