For our client, we are seeking a Lead Applied Scientist, Document Understanding to join the team of a leader in the Media space.

This role will drive advanced applied research and productization efforts focused on turning complex document content into structured, usable intelligence. You will lead work across semantic modeling, knowledge extraction, and evaluation methodologies while partnering closely with engineering to bring research solutions into production. The position blends deep NLP and machine learning expertise with the ability to influence technical architecture and deliver scalable AI systems that improve document comprehension and downstream decision-making.

Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available

Compensation: $147,600 – $274,200 annually

Responsibilities

• Design and deploy semantic chunking models for complex documents
• Build document enrichment systems using structured taxonomies
• Develop LLM-based knowledge graph construction pipelines
• Lead knowledge distillation for production-ready models
• Design evaluation frameworks using expert annotation
• Make technical decisions on architecture and extraction methods
• Collaborate with engineering on delivery and reliability

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science, AI, NLP, or a related field
• 8+ years of experience in document understanding and applied NLP
• Expertise in the end-to-end ML lifecycle
• Strong Python skills with experience in PyTorch and Hugging Face
• Published research in top-tier conferences
