Job summary

Lane Community College’s Aviation Academy seeks a Lead Aircraft Maintenance Technician to guide maintenance, inspection, and repair of the training fleet (Cessna 152, Piper PA‑28, PA‑44). You will ensure airworthiness, sign off FAA‑required work, and manage a maintenance team within a Part 141 environment.

The role includes overseeing parts, records, and coordination with instructors and administrators, with flexible hours to support students. Permanent, full‑time position in Oregon.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of documented industry employment as a full‑time general aviation aircraft mechanic on Cessna 152, Piper PA‑28, and PA‑44 series aircraft.
• One year of documented work as an authorized inspector or shop foreman in an FAA repair station or as an FAA Maintenance Inspector.
• FAA Airframe & Powerplant Certificate with Inspection Authority.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an airport security badge.
• Completion of annual TSA Security Awareness Training and a criminal background check.
• Must reside in the state of Oregon.

Responsibilities

Job Description

Lead Aircraft Maintenance Technician – Lead the maintenance, inspection, and repair of the training fleet for the Aviation Academy’s Professional Pilot program. Responsible for ensuring aircraft airworthiness, managing a maintenance crew, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions

• Perform, oversee, and arrange for service, scheduled preventive maintenance, and repairs to maintain airworthiness of all training aircraft (Cessna 152, Piper PA-28, PA-44 series).
• Conduct maintenance or replacement of aircraft components and systems, including complete raw data weight‑and‑balance calculations.
• Sign off work on aircraft as required by FAA regulations and maintain all maintenance records in a Part 141 training school.
• May complete in‑flight evaluations following maintenance or repair work.
• Assure compliance with all FAA and other applicable regulations, including maintaining aircraft documents and status in SkyScheduler or other reporting systems.
• Lead, plan, assign tasks, train, and provide priorities for part‑time or full‑time mechanics.
• Order parts, track inventory, and maintain a record of parts and labor on a monthly basis.
• Collaborate with the Dean, Director, Chief Flight Instructors, and other team members on fleet decisions and staffing.
• Educate and re‑educate flight instructors and students on best practices for aircraft use and care.
• Work flexible hours (mornings, evenings, weekends) as required by student needs and workload.
• Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to student privacy in accordance with FERPA standards.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of documented industry employment as a full‑time general aviation aircraft mechanic on Cessna 152, Piper PA‑28, and PA‑44 series aircraft.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree.
• Experience working on Cessna 152s and Piper PA‑28 aircraft.
• Experience tracking, maintaining, and documenting aircraft airworthiness including ADs and SBs.
• Experience with IHL purchasing processes and competitive bidding.
• Multilingual abilities and meeting FAA English requirements.

Benefits

Hourly wage of $30.48 to $42.84 (classified hourly pay grade 14). Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, basic term life insurance, long‑term disability, vacation, personal time, and paid sick leave. Lane Community College qualifies for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Physical Demands & Working Environment

Physical strength and agility to lift aircraft parts, utilize hand‑eye coordination, and access all aircraft areas for inspections and repairs. Visual acuity and safety awareness are required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• In-depth knowledge of FAA regulations and current advisories, service bulletins, and aircraft maintenance publications.
• Proficiency with aircraft maintenance tools, equipment, and safety procedures.
• Skill in using software for documentation (word processing, spreadsheets, email, SkyScheduler).
• Ability to organize inventory, schedule maintenance, and document records accurately.
• Strong communication and teamwork for instructor, student, and instructor interaction.

Permanent, non‑exempt, full‑time position at the Aviation Academy.
