Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Advanced Practitioner to join our Neurocritical Care Team, providing leadership and advanced clinical care in a high-acuity, collaborative environment.
The Lead Advanced Practitioner (AP) for the Neurocritical care ICU and Neurosurgery services at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center will provide clinical leadership and operational oversight for a team of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants delivering care in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment.
This dual-role position combines expert-level clinical care with team management responsibilities, supporting institutional goals around quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency. The Lead AP works in close partnership with Neurocritical care physicians, Neurosurgeons, Nursing leaders, and the Department of Advanced Practice to ensure consistent, evidence-based care and excellence in team performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice & Patient Care
- Deliver advanced, evidence-based care to critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients.
- Perform and document comprehensive assessments, develop treatment plans, order and interpret diagnostics, and implement interventions.
- Respond to emergencies and coordinate with the multidisciplinary team to provide timely and safe patient care.
- Participate in daily rounds, case conferences, and care transitions to ensure continuity of care.
Team Leadership & Staff Development
- Provide day-to-day clinical and operational leadership to the Neuro ICU AP team.
- Onboard and orient new team members, ensuring successful integration into the unit.
- Offer mentorship, coaching, and real-time clinical guidance.
- Promote staff engagement, professional growth, and alignment with Penn Medicine values.
Operations & Workflow Oversight
- Develop and manage staffing models to support 24/7 ICU coverage.
- Manage team schedules, payroll, and time-off requests using eStar.
- Partner with physician and nursing leaders to streamline workflows, reduce inefficiencies, and enhance patient throughput.
- Serve as a liaison between the Neuro ICU team and hospital leadership, facilitating communication and process improvements.
Quality & Safety Leadership
- Champion safety and quality initiatives in alignment with UPHS and Neuro ICU goals.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives, including unit-based quality councils (UBCL) and CEQI projects.
- Address patient feedback and clinical incidents with a focus on resolution, learning, and prevention.
Recruitment, Credentialing & Compliance
- Support recruitment and hiring of APs; assist with interviews, onboarding, and orientation.
- Ensure all team members maintain current licensure, board certifications, and hospital credentialing.
- Conduct annual performance reviews and manage any performance-related concerns in collaboration with the Director of Advanced Practice.
Organizational Engagement
- Represent the Neuro ICU AP team in monthly leadership meetings and report back key updates.
- Collaborate with Penn Medicine stakeholders on workforce planning, service development, and strategic growth initiatives.
Qualifications:
Licensure & Certification (Required):
- Current licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a:
- Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) with board certification in an applicable specialty
- Physician Assistant (PA-C) with NCCPA certification
- ICU experience and critical care certification preferred.
Education:
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Physician Assistant Studies.
Experience:
- At least 3–5 years of clinical experience in a critical care or Neuro ICU setting strongly preferred.
- Prior supervisory, leadership, or team lead experience required.
