Job summary

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) invites applications for an AB Engine/QMED Engineer aboard the RFPEW program on the David Packard, a state‑of‑the‑art US Flag research vessel. This is a 1‑year full‑time position with potential extension, based in Moss Landing, CA.

The role focuses on operation and monitoring of the power plant, maintenance routines, and safety strategies. MBARI seeks autonomous problem solvers who collaborate with scientists and crew to achieve mission goals.

Qualifications

• Minimum US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential and RFPEW (III/4) required.
• Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties VI/6.
• Valid passport, TWIC, and Medical Certificate.
• Ability to work up to 30 days continuously at sea.

Responsibilities

• Assist the officer of the watch, monitor mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and control equipment.
• Oversee the power management system, observe plant status and operate auxiliary systems as needed.
• Complete maintenance inspections and tasks.
• Foster a positive work atmosphere and collaboration between scientists and crew.
