The Children’s Law Center in New York offers a summer internship for law students. Working with the writing/appellate team, you will develop legal research and writing skills and contribute to family law matters, including preparing memoranda and drafts for trial and appellate proceedings.
You will engage in case review, drafting, and observe courtroom proceedings while experiencing a full-time, hybrid schedule from June 7 to August 13.
The Children's Law Center (CLC) is a non-profit legal services organization that represents children in custody, visitation, guardianship, paternity, family offense, and related child protective (abuse or neglect) proceedings in the Family Courts and the Integrated Domestic Violence Parts of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, and in appeals therefrom. CLC represents approximately 5,000 children annually in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, providing holistic and zealous representation and support in the Court, the community and the legislature. CLC's mission is to empower our clients, prevent trauma and promote wellbeing.
Working closely with attorneys who are members of CLC's writing/appellate team, a law student intern will have the opportunity to hone legal research and writing skills, and learn about family law and the role of the attorney for the child. The law student would engage in activities, which may include legal research, digesting case records (school, medical, forensic reports), drafting legal documents, including memoranda of law, motions, and/or sections of written trial summations and appellate briefs, and conducting legal and factual cite checking of documents. There also may be opportunities to observe court proceedings, client interviews, and attorney conferences.
Candidates must have strong writing and research skills
This summer program will follow a full-time (9am - 5pm) hybrid model, from June 7th - August 13th.
CLC encourages students to seek law school fellowships and other external funding opportunities to support their internships. Limited stipends may be available for students who are unable to secure alternative funding, subject to available resources.
As an equal opportunity employer, The Children's Law Center is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable work environment. All qualified applicants will be afforded equal employment opportunities without discrimination because of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, disability or marital status.
