Job summary

University of South Carolina-Beaufort is hiring a Law Enforcement Officer I/Public Safety Officer to provide police protection for USC Beaufort campus and properties. Officers are certified and empowered with full arrest authority state-wide, enforcing state laws and university rules.

Starting pay ranges from $58,000 to $70,566 depending on experience. Benefits include take-home vehicle, tuition assistance after six months, on-campus gym and meals, and comprehensive health options.

Qualifications

  • One year experience in public safety/law enforcement or related field.
  • Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the legal rights of suspects and personnel.
  • Knowledge of SC laws and USC policies.
  • Familiarity with interagency relationships and functions.
  • Skill in operating law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment.

Job description

The Law Enforcement Officer I/Public Safety Officer provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the University of South Carolina Community and property. These are certified police officers in accordance with SC Code of Laws 23-6-430, empowered with full arrest and police authority state wide. They enforce state laws and University rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

Patrols assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law and Policy / apprehends and arrests violators. Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for assistance. Keeps records and makes reports regarding all activities. Assists with crime prevention measures and programs. Conducts preliminary investigations

Testifies in court and other criminal and administrative proceedings to include prosecution of defendants in magistrate’s court. Process and documents crime scenes. Conducts surveillance and performs undercover assignments. Collects and presents evidence to obtain and execute search and/or arrest warrants.

Preferred Qualifications

One year experience in public safety/law enforcement, a related field, or comparable educational experience. Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role. Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures. Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence. Knowledge of the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel. Knowledge of the laws of South Carolina, and policies of the University. Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies. Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment.

Starting Pay

$58,000 minimum (no experience) to $70,566 (5 or more years of certified law enforcement experience)
