RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE: Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will be offered a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 will be paid upon successfully completing training at the Border Patrol Academy, with the remainder paid after completing a three-year service agreement. Agents accepting a prioritized location (Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; Ajo, AZ) will be eligible for an additional $10,000.

Salary and Benefits
Location impacts pay rates; some locations have higher locality pay. Fully trained agents may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014.
This position follows a career ladder progression: GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, GS-12, with promotions possible after 52 weeks in each grade.

Duties and Responsibilities
As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA), you will be part of a 60,000-strong workforce dedicated to protecting borders, deterring illicit activity, and supporting economic prosperity. Key activities include:
Qualifications
GL-5: One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, stress management, learning regulations, and information gathering skills, OR a bachelor’s degree, OR a combination of experience and education.
GL-7: One year of specialized work experience in law enforcement or related fields, OR a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement, OR a year of graduate-level education in related fields, OR a combination of experience and education.
GL-9: One year of specialized experience performing searches, apprehensions, and evidence gathering, equivalent to the next lower grade.
GS-11: One year of experience developing intelligence, leading investigations, utilizing complex technology, and training peers, equivalent to the next lower grade.
Other requirements include U.S. citizenship, primary residency for at least three of the last five years, age restrictions (must be referred before age 40 unless prior federal service), and eligibility for Veterans’ Preference.
Post-hire, training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, will be approximately six months, covering laws, operations, driving, firearms, and other skills. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish is preferred; training will be provided if needed.
