Job Overview

The Law Clerk will support the Health and Human Services (HHS), Office for Civil Rights (OCR) by providing mission support to OCR regional offices to ensure compliance with HIPAA Rules and applicable federal civil rights, conscience, and religious freedom regulations. This position is 100% remote.

Essential Requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain access to classified information at the Public Trust level
  • Knowledge of nondiscrimination, conscience regulations, HIPAA Rules, court decisions, and agency case precedent
  • Case management experience with clinical knowledge, interpersonal skills, and organizational abilities
  • Experience with high volume case loads
  • Proficiency in English grammar and punctuation
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio)
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Evaluate complaints for potential violations of HIPAA and other regulations; provide written comments to the COR.
  2. Respond to correspondence and calls related to complaints and technical assistance requests.
  3. Draft documents related to complaint resolution, including investigative strategies, notification and data requests, closure letters, resolution agreements, and corrective action plans.
  4. Conduct interviews of complainants and witnesses.
  5. Review policies, medical records, reports, and other relevant documents.
  6. Apply knowledge of nondiscrimination, HIPAA, and related regulations to investigation and compliance work.
Education and Experience

A law degree (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school or a Master's degree from an accredited university is required.

Physical Demands

Primarily office environment; includes sitting, handling objects, operating computers, occasional standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
