Job Description - Law Clerk I (26141605)

Position Title: Law Clerk I, 6th Judicial District, Livingston, Montana.

Job Overview:

• Law clerks serving more than two years may be moved to senior law clerk status.
• Professional legal work performed for the Honorable Judge Rebecca Swandal.
• Prepare legal research, memoranda, opinions, orders; review laws, court decisions, briefs, and related authorities.
• Draft briefs, legal memoranda, statements of issues, draft opinions and orders with recommendations.
• Maintain records of court proceedings, assist in jury instruction preparation, attend court sessions to record testimony.
• Assist judge in the preparation of orders, including transcribing court records if required, maintaining a law library collection, and providing bailiff services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of general law, state law, established precedent, and legal reference sources.
• Knowledge of trial court practices, rules, and procedures.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
• Ability to research complex legal problems and apply legal principles.
• Ability to represent the court respectfully.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to transcribe audio tapes if required.
• Skill in computer word processing and legal research software.
• Skill in electronic recording equipment for trial court proceedings.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A Juris Doctorate is required.
• Legal research experience.
• Excellent writing skills.
