The Laundry Worker II position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of commercial laundry equipment and performing complex laundry work in a commercial laundry. Responsibilities include overseeing the laundry process in the soil sort and dryer areas, promoting teamwork, sorting, classifying, weighing, and recording weights, loading/unloading Continuous Batch Washer (CBW), pressing, shuttling, and operating large and small dryers, ironing, folding, preparing clothes and linens for delivery, and routine cleaning of the work area. Work involves both light and heavy physical labor. Employee will follow all HHSC, Facility, and Regional Laundry procedures for reporting time and attend work on a regular and predictable schedule performing all tasks as assigned. All tasks will be performed within the established time frames. This position works under the close supervision of the Laundry Worker III, Laundry Manager, and Regional Laundry Director with minimum latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment. Occasionally, this position will work under close supervision of the Laundry Maintenance assisting with daily laundry preventative maintenance.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

  1. Attends work on a regular basis and may be requested to work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime.
  2. Assist in overseeing the laundry process in the soil sort and clean processing areas.
  3. Operation of the Continuous Batch Washer (CBW), Press, Shuttle, and 300# Dryers.
  4. Operation of commercial washer/extractors and dryers.
  5. Maintains a clean and safe environment to meet infection control and safety standards.
  6. Attends and participates in all mandatory training to meet HHSC/ABSSLC requirements.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  1. Knowledge of commercial laundry operation, equipment, laundering techniques, and procedures.
  2. Ability to safely operate commercial laundry equipment.
  3. Ability to fold neatly and quickly.
  4. Ability to distinguish colors.
  5. Ability to use proper lifting techniques.
  6. Ability to lift/carry 40-50 pounds.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date.

Initial Screening Criteria:

Paid or unpaid experience in performing laundry and/or sewing services; or Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent. 6 months experience in commercial laundry operation preferred.

Additional Information:

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position.
