Laundry Specialist
  • Department: Environmental Services
  • Reports to: Environmental Services Manager
  • Work Location: Thornapple Manor Main Building
  • Salary Range: $17.07 - $18.96/hr. based on experience

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Sort, wash, dry, weigh, and fold soiled laundry, linen, garments, etc. and place in appropriate containers or assigned areas.
  • Inspect and repair damaged items or notify the appropriate staff for further action.
  • Ensure all laundry equipment is functioning properly and report any issues to maintenance.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the laundry area, including proper disposal of waste.
  • Adhere to all safety and hygiene protocols to prevent contamination.
  • Collaborate with team members to manage laundry demands promptly and efficiently.
  • Keep accurate records of laundry processed, including usage and inventory levels.
  • Press or iron garments as directed.
  • Fold, count, stack, hang, and distribute clean laundry, linen, garments, etc., to residents daily or as instructed.
  • During emergency conditions, ensure that clean laundry, linen, garments, etc., are distributed to designated areas as instructed.
  • Clean floors, including sweeping, dusting, and damp/wet mopping. (NOTE: Ensure that appropriate caution/safety signs are properly set up prior to performing such duties.)
  • Keep walls and ceilings clean by washing, wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, disinfecting, deodorizing, etc.
  • Remove dirt, dust, grease, film, etc., from equipment or floor surfaces, using proper cleaning/disinfecting solutions.
  • Discard waste/trash into proper containers and re-line trash receptacle with plastic liner.
  • Keep briefs (disposable underwear) cart fully stocked and deliver briefs to residents as directed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION REQUIRED
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in laundry services or a healthcare environment is a plus.
  • Ability to operate laundry machinery and follow maintenance protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure cleanliness and quality standards are met.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess a positive attitude that cultivates the health and well‑being of all.
  • Must be open to collaboration with various departments and personnel. Accountability of duties assigned.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Physical stamina to handle a fast‑paced environment and lift heavy items when necessary.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of the position can be met.
  • Must function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to collaborate effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of fifty pounds.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Works in all areas of the building.
  • Moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions.
  • May be required to work on shifts other than the one for which hired.
  • Involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
  • Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Subject of callback during emergency conditions (i.e., severe weather. Evacuation, post disaster, etc.)
  • Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
  • Subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
  • Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B virus.
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
