Job Title: Laundry Attendant

Department: Laundry - Corrections

Reports To: Facility Manager

Classification: Non-Exempt

Updated: February 2025

Position Summary

To assist in the laundry department with the washing, drying, sorting, folding, transporting, and distribution of all linen and inmate jumpsuits, clothing, etc.

Essential Functions

  • Able to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision
  • Ensure that all linen and inmate clothing are covered in clean and proper bins at all times during transportation
  • Place jumpsuits, linen, etc. in machine and set controls on machines for the proper cleaning cycle
  • Remove jumpsuits, linen, etc. from washer and dryers for next step of laundry process
  • Use accepted techniques of folding linen and jumpsuits
  • Distribute laundered items to housing areas as necessary
  • Demonstrate the ability to learn and understand the need and use of infection control techniques
  • Supervise inmate workers, ensuring appropriate procedures are followed
  • Clean laundry bins
  • Maintain laundry room and equipment in clean and orderly manner reporting any equipment breakdowns to management or Service Coordinator

Other Functions

  • Perform other tasks as assigned
  • Maintain logs per ACA requirements as applicable
  • Maintain inmate worker tracking charts, training log, PPE log, bin inventory/distribution log, inmate jumpsuit distribution logs, etc.

Competencies

  • Ability to follow written and oral instruction
  • Ability to fill out paperwork/work orders in a clear manner

Technical Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of proper laundry and sanitization procedures
  • Knowledge of how to operate laundry equipment
  • Understand and abide by all applicable Safety Data Sheets (SDS) procedures.

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with normal working hours Monday through Friday, working 40 hours per week. However, as business needs become necessary, after-hours, holidays, or weekends may be required.

Travel

No travel is required for this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisory duties for this position.

Work Environment

This position is located within a correctional facility. Must be able to work in hazardous conditions while maintaining safety standards, work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, industrial settings, and construction sites, and work in loud environments and temperature extremes.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Essential functions of this position require: manual dexterity, large motor skills, ability to communicate, lifting, kneeling, squatting, standing, walking, climbing (including but not limited to ladders), crawling, stooping, turning/twisting, balancing, reaching with varying frequencies.

Heavy work: Occasional lifting and carrying objects up to 75 pounds, Frequent lifting and carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and/or continuous lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling 10-20 pounds.

Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving skills are important.

The employee is regularly required to talk or listen effectively.
