Responsibilities

Laundry Attendant will perform a variety of tasks in maintaining laundry and equipment for the Youth Services Center. Duties include cleaning, drying, folding, and storing clothing which consist of resident clothing, bedding, and towels.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• 1. Receive and sort soiled laundry by residential units and by types to include resident clothing, bedding and towels.
• 2. Load, unload, adjust washers and dryers with appropriate settings; measure laundry chemicals as required.
• 3. Operate all washing machines and dryers in adherence to all safety standards; sort and weigh laundry; fold clean laundry; sort and return to proper destination.
• 4. Provide light maintenance of equipment; clean and remove lint from filters daily or as required.
• 5. Ensure all supplies are in a neat and organized; report faulty equipment, safety hazards and equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
• 6. Monitor inventories of supplies, clothing, bedding, towels and inform supervisor of items needing replacement; make minor repairs to items, i.e. mending torn clothing and linens.
• 7. Maintain a clean environment which may include proper wipe down and disinfection of machines and sweep floors in laundry area.
• 8. Maintain security of equipment, keys and supplies issued. Track and document all clothing and linen in accordance with American Correctional Association and Children Youth & Family Department standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or GED and be a minimum of at least 16 years old and enrolled in school.
• Must have knowledge of equipment and machinery sufficient to be able to monitor, make minor adjustments and identify and report minor malfunctions to supervisor.
• Must have knowledge of safety hazards and necessary precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment.
• Must be able to maintain accurate records and document actions taken; understand laundry machinery.
• Must be able to work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Must be able to communicate in oral and written English.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS SCREENING AND COMPLIANCE

• 1. Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
• 2. Employee must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
• 3. Employee must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• 1. All essential duties are performed primarily indoors.
• 2. May be exposed to housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals.
• 3. Work hazards include exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment. May be required to do light lifting.
• 4. Worker works alone with directions from supervisor.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS

• 1. Equipment typically used in the performance of duties include washing machines and clothes dryers.
• 2. Materials and products handled in the course of performing essential duties include cleaning chemicals and supplies.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS

• 1. Must be able to apply knowledge of institutional or commercial laundering.
• 2. Must be able to maintain high level of concentration while performing repetitious work.
• 3. Must be able to understand basic math and English principles including proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.

PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS

• 1. Must be able to lift up to an estimated 50 pounds from ground to waist level. Must be able to utilize dollies to move heavy equipment and supplies.
• 2. Must be able to push and pull 75 to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.
• 3. Ability to stand and/or walk up to eight (8) hours in a day.
• 4. Must be able to lift light weight on occasion from the ground to the shoulder.
• 5. Must be able to bend at the waist and twist/rotate occasionally.
• 6. Must be able to work with arms bent or extended away from body or overhead and be able to push/pull with arms as needed.
• 7. Must be able to crouch and kneel occasionally.
• 8. Must be able to use hands and fingers in order to grasp/manipulate various equipment and materials needed to perform essential duties.
• 9. Must be able to coordinate use of hands and eyes in operation of laundry equipment.
