Job summary

Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source seeks an Assistant Physicist for the 34-ID-E beamline. The role supports commissioning, operation, and the development of microdiffraction and microscopy methods to advance materials science.

The candidate will assist user experiments, contribute to scientific publications, and help grow the beamline's user community. A Ph.D. and experience with synchrotron X-ray techniques are required.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in physics, materials science, engineering, or closely related field.
• Experience with X-ray diffraction, crystallography, and microdiffraction.
• Experience with synchrotron X-ray techniques.
• Programming and computational data-analysis skills.
• Ability to interpret diffraction and materials-characterization data.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a scientific team environment.

Responsibilities

• Support commissioning, operation, and continued development of the beamline.
• Develop advanced X-ray microdiffraction and microscopy methods, instrumentation, and scientific applications.
• Support user experiments at 34-ID-E, including guidance on data analysis and interpretation.
• Contribute to the growth of the beamline's user community.
• Carry out independent and collaborative research and help expand scientific capabilities at 34-ID-E.
• Publish and present research results in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences.
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
