The City of Rohnert Park is one of the few cities in the nation to consolidate delivery of primary police and fire services by utilizing cross-trained personnel.
These personnel are truly "Public Safety Officers" and not just specialists in one area of Public Safety. All officers are trained as firefighters. This "Public Safety" concept has been in operation since the City was incorporated.
Public Safety Officers in the City of Rohnert Park have the unique opportunity of combining two great careers in one job.
The Public Safety Department is seeking motivated individuals with a strong commitment to providing excellent and friendly customer service to the members of the community, who possess high ethical standards and are team players.
Performs law enforcement, fire suppression, and emergency medical activities in the protection of life and property by patrolling assigned areas and responding to calls for service; conducts investigations of crimes and incidents; and performs other work as required.
The Public Safety Officer class is the working level position in the City's public safety operations. Incumbents are assigned to a geographical area of the City to patrol either by foot patrol or in a vehicle and are expected to provide a full range of law enforcement, fire suppression, and emergency response services during an assigned shift. Some positions may receive special assignments to work in investigations, serve as a Motor Officer, Traffic Officer, K-9 Officer, or be assigned full-time to Fire Services. This class is distinguished from the Public Safety Sergeant which has on-going supervisory responsibility.
General supervision is normally provided by the Public Safety Sergeant, but may be received from other Department management. Because of the nature of public safety work, incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise a great deal of individual initiative and judgment following their field training period. Incumbents assigned to the position of Field Training Officer will be required to provide lead supervision of the performance of assigned personnel.(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary)
