Job summary

QuEra Computing, Inc. seeks a Laser Safety Engineer to own end-to-end laser safety by design, from optics selection to interlocks and hazard analysis.

You will work with Laser Safety Officers and engineers across US, UK, and Japan to ensure safety compliance and robust protection for high-power laser systems. Responsibilities include reviewing beam paths, specifying layered protection, addressing fiber hazards, and defining detection for stray radiation.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Physics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; hands-on equivalent experience
• Hands-on experience with Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems, including high power sources
• Laser safety engineering built and used on real hardware (containment, interlocks, hazard analysis)
• Knowledge of ANSI Z136 or IEC 60825 and applying to non-standard configurations
• Competence in optical power measurement, beam characterization, and stray light assessment
• Effective written and verbal communication with laser scientists and engineers

Responsibilities

• Own beam path safety review as a design gate for laser modules and systems
• Specify layered protection at design stage (optics, coating, containment, beam dumps)
• Address fiber-borne hazards and high power delivery issues
• Define scattered and stray radiation detection and integration with system telemetry
• Design interlock and access control architecture across enclosures and doors
• Retrofit containment and interlocks on deployed setups
• Perform hazard analyses, define laser controlled areas, and write acceptance criteria
• Run hazard surveys, investigate incidents, and specify PPE by area
• Own laser safety standards across ANSI Z136, IEC, and BS EN 60825
• Collaborate with Safety Officers and international sites to apply safety requirements
