Job Description

General Purpose of Job: Responsible for the efficient and effective processing of patients through the clerical and clinical areas of the practice/clinic. Under the general direction of the physician or advanced practice provider, provides high quality, compassionate patient care.

Essential Duties:

This job description covers the minimum essential duties assigned regularly. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Duties may be altered or modified as needed.

  • Prepares patients for examinations, obtains vital signs and chief complaints, and documents information accurately.
  • Performs laboratory and diagnostic testing.
  • Answers, screens, and triages telephone calls; takes accurate messages and distributes them appropriately within practice guidelines.
  • Schedules tests and referral appointments for patients.
  • Administers oral and injectable medications; phones prescriptions to pharmacies.
  • Engages in patient and family teaching as appropriate; provides an educational environment for patients and families.
  • Works on gaps in care registries to improve care quality.
  • Maintains logs and required checks (e.g., refrigerator temps, medications, oxygen).
  • Participates in in-services, committees, and helps develop and implement quality control and practice policies.
  • Inventories, orders, and restocks supplies as needed.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment and ensures environmental safety.
  • Provides clerical and clinical services as required; cross-trained to support practice flow.
Job Requirements

General Requirements: Demonstrates knowledge of patient privacy rights, adheres to HIPAA policies, and respects patient confidentiality. Upholds ICARE values (Innovation, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence). Promotes diversity and inclusivity. Communicates effectively using AIDET. Works safely and reports hazards promptly.

Work Experience: Six months of specialty clinic experience may be required; relevant clinical experience within the past 5 years preferred. Completion of a medical assistant program within the past two years if no prior clinical experience. Previous medical office experience preferred. MA certification and EMR experience are preferred.

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited medical assistant program with externship or a minimum of 5 years of Sparrow medical assistant experience in a clinical setting.

Skills and Knowledge: Ability to provide age-specific patient care, monitor patient conditions, operate department equipment, and communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, and staff. Visual and auditory acuity required. Ability to work in an EMR environment.
