Job description

Overview

The Landscaper position is responsible to provide direction and technical skills, as a member of the LOAM team, to maintain an aesthetic and safe exterior environment at Utah State University. The position coordinates the landscape maintenance activities and responsibilities in an assigned area. The position also assists the Manager in planning, customer service, and other duties as needed. This position will be hired at Level I, II, or III based upon qualifications and duties assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees a specific area on campus or specialty maintenance crew. One of the available vacancies will oversee the Mowing Crew.
  • Assists in personnel issues including hiring, terminations, performance evaluations, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  • Assists in management of budgets by following established guidelines; assists in the prioritizingof expenditures and the preparation of capital and operations budgets.
  • Assists in monitoring employee work schedules; making sure that appropriate staffing levels are maintained.
  • Enforces proper care and safe use of the equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Assists in employee development by providing information and training on new work methods or procedures, safety regulations, work policies, codes, and standards.
  • Assists manager in various duties including, but not limited to: maintenance and monitoring of various records and reports, inventory control, and purchasing supplies.
  • Helps to ensure that customer needs and expectations are met by participating in the timely completion of work.
  • Responds to inquiries from the campus community and members of the general public.
  • Performs snow removal, litter pick-up, leaf removal, weeding, etc.
  • Plants shrubs, trees and flowers; prunes trees and shrubs.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • For Landscaper I:
    • One year of work experience in the green industry.
  • For Landscaper II:
    • Two years of work experience in the green industry, OR an associate degree in Plant Science, LAEP, or related field.
  • For Landscaper III:
    • Four years of work experience in the green industry, OR an associate degree in Plant Science, LAEP, or related field plus two years of work experience in the green industry, OR a Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science, LAEP, or a related field.

  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Skill in effectively communicating with co-workers and customers.
  • Ability to monitor and maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of budget planning and resource allocation management.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices and techniques
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in performing routine manual labor.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints and diagrams.
  • Skill in operating landscape maintenance equipment.

    This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.

    Employees are exposed to hazardous conditions including, noise, vibrations from machinery, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, elevated work spaces, such as scaffolding, and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
