Position Summary

The Landscape Technician supports safe, reliable roadways and well-kept facilities by performing grounds and roadside vegetation maintenance in a fast-paced, team environment in various elements of weather. The position requires the safe and efficient use of various tools and equipment, and supports tasks such as mowing and trimming, tree and shrub pruning, planting and mulching, weed and vegetation control, irrigation system upkeep, and litter and debris removal along assigned roadways, medians, interchanges, and facility grounds. The team member must work well with others under both direct and indirect supervision, may interact directly with customers and the public, and must bring attention to detail and knowledge of roadway safety. This is a hands-on role with training provided; work may include night or weekend shifts and on-call response during storms or emergencies. Horticultural knowledge is preferred but not required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain a strong safety-first mindset in all tasks, following company and regulatory safety protocols to protect yourself, your team, and the traveling public.
  • Perform roadside and facility landscape maintenance, including mowing, edging, grass and line trimming, tree and shrub pruning, planting, mulching, and seasonal clean-ups to maintain clear sightlines, clear zones, and a professional appearance.
  • Apply herbicides and fertilizers for vegetation and weed control using manual, mechanical, and approved selective chemical methods, in compliance with company standards, product labels, and applicable state and DOT regulations.
  • Install, adjust, and maintain irrigation and sprinkler systems at landscaped interchanges, rest areas, and facility grounds to ensure proper watering of plants and turf.
  • Remove litter, debris, fallen limbs, and other obstructions from roadsides, medians, sidewalks, and outdoor areas to keep them clean, safe, and accessible.
  • Prepare grounds and work sites for adverse weather by securing loose items and equipment, and support storm response and post-storm clean-up efforts, including after-hours emergency call backs as part of a scheduled on-call rotation.
  • Set up and maintain simple work zone traffic control, including cones, signage, and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) devices as directed, protecting work crews and motorists during roadside vegetation work.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of landscaping tools and machinery, including commercial mowers, tractors, trimmers, edgers, blowers, chain saws, and pole saws, per Company and OSHA guidelines.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle, trailer, and equipment inspections; perform routine cleaning, lubrication, blade sharpening, and preventative maintenance, and report equipment damage, malfunctions, or safety issues to the Crew Leader immediately.
  • Order, track, and safely load and unload supplies, tools, and materials for ground maintenance activities.
  • Accurately log work orders, checklists, and chemical application records, both manually and electronically, and submit service and Company documentation in a timely manner.
  • Listen during safety meetings and ask for clarification as needed; complete initial technical training and regular update training and ask your supervisor for any training needed to perform assigned tasks.
  • Adhere to all Company policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and driving laws; dress in company uniform every day and clock in and out using the approved time-keeping method.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all crew members; be courteous to co-workers, vendors, customers, and the public, and respond to customer requests in a timely manner. Immediately report co-worker or customer conflicts to the Crew Leader.
  • Complete assigned tasks promptly, steadily, and safely; willingly adjust to timelines and workloads, help co-workers when your tasks are finished, and be engaged in finding and offering solutions when issues arise.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge
  • Basic understanding of grounds and roadside maintenance tasks such as mowing and trimming, pruning, planting, mulching, weed control, and debris removal.
  • Awareness of work zone safety fundamentals, PPE use, and hazard recognition near live traffic; MOT/Flagger concepts are a plus.
  • Familiarity with safe operation of landscape and irrigation tools and common hand and power equipment (mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers, pole saws); training provided.
Skills
  • Work and stay on task with limited supervision, both independently and as a cooperative member of a crew, while prioritizing safety and quality.
  • Learn and identify various plant types; correctly use landscape and irrigation tools and navigate around landscape and irrigation equipment safely.
  • Work on a major roadway safely (conscious of traffic patterns, surroundings, etc.) and pull a trailer safely, if driving.
  • Use a smartphone or tablet to receive assignments, enter notes, upload photos, and communicate with the crew.
  • Walk, climb, stoop, reach, crawl, crouch, kneel, push, pull, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs. on uneven terrain near traffic.
  • Work outdoors in all weather, including heat, humidity, rain, and wind; adapt to multiple shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-backs during storms.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
RequiredQualifications
  • Must be at least 23 years old (per company insurance requirements).
  • Must possess an active and valid United States driver’s license with no restrictions, and be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and maintain insurability under company policy.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D., or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or a related field.
  • Basic math, reading, writing, and recordkeeping skills to complete work orders and material logs accurately.
  • Ability to obtain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) or Flagger certification within company timelines.
  • Compliance with the company Drug and Alcohol Policy; able to pass pre-employment and random substance abuse testing, a seven-year criminal background check, and a job-related physical if required.
  • Willing and able to travel within the assigned district and report to different work sites; living within a reasonable response time to the yard is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, irrigation, or road maintenance, including operating commercial mowers, tractors, or similar equipment; horticultural knowledge is a plus.
  • State pesticide applicator license, or the ability to obtain one, is a plus; FDACS CEU compliance where applicable.
