Job summary

Texas State University in San Marcos seeks a Landscape Specialist to support the Director of Grounds in maintaining a high-quality tier 1 landscape by performing quality assurance duties, identifying landscape improvement needs, assisting in bed redesigns, and ensuring new landscapes establish properly.

Responsibilities include preparing beds, installing materials, maintaining campus landscapes, and assisting in tree maintenance and events while adhering to safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to determine acceptable work quality and quantity.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team to manage multiple tasks.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and perform strenuous outdoor duties.
  • Experience working outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and proper equipment use.
  • Ability to perform Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Commitment to quality, customer service and safety.
  • Must attain pesticide applicator license within one year of hire.
  • Basic horticulture knowledge of trees and landscape plants.
  • Knowledge of native Texas landscape plants and annuals.

  • Assist installing landscape materials.
  • Maintain landscaped bed areas and perform quality inspections with work orders.
  • Prepare for special events.
  • Support tree maintenance, planting, or removal tasks.
  • Assist in equipment preventative maintenance.
  • Identify herbicide needs and perform applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Ability to communicate, receive and assign instructions, direct work, recognize and change priorities. Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to determine acceptable work quality and quantity.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment to handle complex projects, prioritize and manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs., and perform strenuous physical duties for an entire shift.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate industry equipment for extended periods.
  • Knowledge and application of safety practices related to job duties, and safe use of industry related equipment.
  • Ability to perform Job Hazard Analysis.
  • A commitment to quality, customer service, personal development and safety.
  • Must be able to attain TDA pesticide applicator’s license within one year of hire.
  • Basic knowledge of horticulture and ornamental plant materials, including trees and utilizing the proper grounds operations equipment required to maintain their growth habits and needs.
  • Ability to identify common native landscape plants of Texas
  • Experience planting annuals
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of proper pesticide use.
  • Knowledge of invasive plant species in our area.
  • Tree pruning experience
Job Description:

Assist the Director of Grounds in developing and maintaining a high-quality tier 1 landscape by performing quality assurance duties, identifying landscape improvement and renovation needs, assist in designing new beds, and identifying plant replacement needs. Ensure new landscape establishment.

Job Duties:
  • Assist in preparing landscape beds by removing plant materials, amending soils, fertilizing, and mulching.
  • Assist installing landscape materials.
  • Assist in maintaining landscaped bed areas throughout campus. Perform quality assurance inspections and generate work orders.
  • Assist in preparation of special events.
  • Assist tree maintenance staff with tree planting, maintenance, or removal.
  • Assist in equipment preventative maintenance.
  • Identify herbicide application needs, plan and perform applications
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
