Purpose
Provide skilled landscaping work to maintain the health and appearance of The University of Texas at Austin campus landscape.
Responsibilities
- Supervises a crew of gardeners and groundskeepers in the performance of landscaping tasks.
- Maintains landscape to university standards by safely operating landscape equipment including power mowers, string trimmers, blowers, and other equipment and tools used in the performance of landscape tasks.
- Ensures the timely completion of written and oral instructions, assigns work to the crew, completes routine paperwork including performance evaluations, enters reports electronically, and ensures the accuracy of employee attendance records.
- Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the task, assures crew members follow safety rules and wear appropriate PPE, reports unsafe conditions, and maintains safe conditions for the crew and the university community.
- Applies mulch, soil amendments, fertilizers and pesticides, and irrigation to the landscape as instructed.
- Cleans, maintains, operates university vehicles and equipment, and maintains acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
- Safely operates landscaping equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to pull, push, and lift up to 50 lbs. Other related functions to be assigned, including working with other departments within the Campus Operations portfolio and throughout The University of Texas System, and occasional overtime required, to support organizational goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications
High school graduation or GED. Four years of experience in landscape maintenance or construction. One year experience in a supervisory capacity. Experience in the care of plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns. Experience using power equipment and hand tools used in gardening work. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to pull, push, and lift up to 50 lbs. Capable of working in all types of adverse conditions (weather, dust, noise, heights, fumes). Stable work history. Ability to perform basic computer operations. Current Class "C" Operator Driver License required. Prior to date of hire, applicant selected must provide a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) showing a driving history going back 36 months. This includes all states resided in for the past 36 months. MVR will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a University-owned vehicle. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's degree or formal coursework in horticulture or related field. Technical training in landscaping or horticulture including the concepts and theory of organic management programs. Knowledge of the use of native plants in the landscape. Experience applying this knowledge in day to day operations. Knowledge of the concepts of riparian zone function and restoration, including management of invasive species. Experience with use and maintenance of battery powered landscape equipment. More than four years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaping in an institutional or commercial setting. More than four years of experience using landscaping equipment. More than one year of experience in a supervisory capacity. Pesticide Applicators License issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary Range
$42,848 + depending on qualifications

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
