Job summary

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg is seeking a Landscape Maintenance Worker to perform flower bed installation and maintenance, fertilizer and pesticide applications, bed maintenance and mulching, and, as needed, routine grounds maintenance and snow removal.

The role requires physical stamina, the ability to lift 50 pounds or more, valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain required licenses within specified timeframes; you will work 40 hours per week, with potential overtime and by design an

Qualifications

  • Experience with general grounds maintenance and/or landscape installation and maintenance.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain Registered Technician License within 3 months and Certified Fertilizer Applicator License within 6 months.
  • Able to move and handle 50+ pounds, climb stairs, and work from ladders or scaffolds; stand/walk for long periods.
  • Able to communicate effectively and work well in a team; follow directions.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • May work additional hours/shifts; this is an emergency personnel position.

Job Description

Reporting to the Landscape Care & Maintenance Supervisor, theLandscape Maintenance Worker performs flower bed installation andmaintenance, fertilizer and pesticide applications, bed maintenanceand mulching. Additionally, as needed, performs routine groundsmaintenance and snow removal.

The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takesinitiative to support a healthy work environment; strives tofulfill the terms in the Standards of Conduct; exemplifies theVirginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports theuniversity’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Required Qualifications
  • Experience such as general grounds maintenance and/or landscapeinstallation and maintenance.
  • Must have valid drivers license.
  • Must be able to obtain Registered Technician License within 3months of employment and Certified Fertilizer Applicator Licensewithin 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objectsweighing 50 pounds or more; maneuver materials up and down stairs;ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such asladders and scaffolds; and work for long periods of time standing,walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, have good team work skills,and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in theworkplace.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions,including extreme temperatures.
  • May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needsof the department.
  • This is a designated emergency personnel position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in grounds care in an institutional orcommercial setting.
  • Experience using commercial riding mowers, tractors, small powerand hand tools.
  • Experience performing grounds maintenance in populatedareas.
  • Registered Technician License.
  • Experience applying pesticides and fertilizers.
