Job summary

The University of North Carolina Asheville is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Technician to care for the campus landscape, including pruning, mowing, mulching, and pest control. You will work both independently and with a team, following written and oral directions.

The role requires a valid driver’s license, the ability to perform physical outdoor labor in all weather, and experience with landscape construction tasks. Typical hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of horticultural principles for maintaining diverse landscapes.
• Experience with organic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.
• Proficiency in safe operation of grounds equipment.
• Experience in landscape construction tasks.

Responsibilities

• Pruning, weeding, pest control, planting trees, shrubs, and perennials.
• Mulching, fertilizing, maintaining lawns, trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials.
• Mowing, weed removal, snow removal, trash and litter removal, sidewalk/road/parking lot maintenance.
• Use of grounds equipment: commercial riding mowers, blowers, sprayers, pruning tools, garden tools, spreaders, large snow removal equipment.
• Landscape construction: transplanting large trees and shrubs, installing retaining walls and pavers.
• Follow written and oral directions for pesticide and fertilizer applications.
• Physical labor in all weather; assist in event setup and furniture moving as needed.
• Work independently and as part of a team; communicate well with the public.
• Valid driver’s license required.
