Job summary

Town of Carrboro is seeking a skilled Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor to supervise and participate in a range of landscaping tasks. The role involves operating various equipment, maintaining parks, and ensuring safety during operations.

The position reports to the Landscaping and Grounds Supervisor and oversees semiskilled workers. Experience in grounds maintenance and CDL-B eligibility are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with substantial landscaping/grounds maintenance experience.
• Experience operating motorized equipment and performing maintenance.
• Ability to supervise the work of others and establish working relationships.
• Special requirements: NC CDL Class B or ability to obtain within 6 months; pesticide application certificate.

Responsibilities

• Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance activities; mow grass, trim, edge, plant trees and shrubs.
• Supervise and participate in mowing, planting, pruning, seeding, spraying and related tasks.
• Maintain parks and public grounds; clean restrooms, remove trash, repair facilities.
• Operate flower beds, irrigation, and snow/ice control equipment as needed.
• Ensure safety and enforce safety regulations.

Job description

Performs difficult skilled and semiskilled work supervising and participating in a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance assignments; operates equipment in connection with the tasks assigned; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Landscaping and Grounds Supervisor. Supervision is exercised over semiskilled workers.

Physical Requirements

This is very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator.

• Performing landscaping and grounds maintenance activities; maintaining equipment; mowing grass, trimming weeds and shrubs, edging; collecting leaves; planting trees and shrubs; sowing seeds; cleaning park areas.
• Supervises and participates in mowing, planting, pruning, seeding, spraying, fertilizing and related activities pertaining to the cleaning and maintenance of rights-of-way, cemeteries, parks, playing fields, picnic areas and other public grounds;
• Cleans and maintains parks; removes trash, cleans restrooms, maintains natural areas, fields and playgrounds;
• Collects leaves throughout the town; operates leaf collection equipment; rakes leaves;
• Operates mower in the mowing of rights-of-way, parks, cemeteries and public grounds;
• Plants flower beds; plants and prunes trees; sprays pesticides; sows grass; applies fertilizer;
• Leads crew in the maintenance and repair of park areas and recreation facilities; repairs park benches, grills, trash containers, picnic shelters and related facilities;
• Assigns equipment to employees; monitors work quality and quantity;
• Assists Recreation and Parks Department in preparing for holiday and special events;
• Ensures safety of operations; enforces safety regulations;
• Irrigates newly planted trees, shrubs, bushes and flowers;
• Operates snow and ice control equipment when required;
• Operates tractors, mowers and trucks in performance of duties; performs minor and preventive maintenance on equipment;
• Performs related tasks as required.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance and some experience in the operation of motorized equipment.

Special Requirements:

• Possession of a NC CDL Class B License or ability to obtain one within six (6) months.
• Possession of an appropriate certificate relating to application of pesticides.
