Job summary

City of Brownwood is seeking a hands-on landfill operator to perform operational duties across heavy equipment and recycling duties. You will manage daily tasks at the landfill and recycling center, directing customers and processing materials.

The role requires a Texas driver's license, ability to read/write English, and willingness to work outdoors in variable weather. On-the-job training is provided and safety and regulatory compliance are emphasized.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Spread and compact refuse using a compactor.
  • Cover landfill cell portions with daily/intermediate cover using a haul truck.
  • Operate a dozer to rip rock, clear vegetation and spread wood chips.
  • Perform manual labor with hand and power tools.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable TCEQ regulations.
  • Recover refrigerants from white goods per EPA and TCEQ regulations.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on equipment and minor repairs.
  • Assist in extinguishing fires when necessary.
  • Collect fees and direct vehicles to unloading areas.
  • Read and interpret grade settings.
  • Empty dumpsters using a roll-off truck.
  • Process and sort recycling materials and prepare loads for shipping.
  • Provide relief for the recycling center and the scale house office.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Job description

This position is responsible for performing operational duties using various types of equipment throughout the landfill, including but not limited to a dozer, loader, motor grader, compactor, articulated dump truck, backhoe, skid steer, roll-off truck, recycling equipment, and other equipment as required. Responsibilities include the routine maintenance and daily operation of all assigned equipment. The position also performs duties at the recycling center, such as directing customers, segregating waste and recyclables appropriately, and processing materials. Additional responsibilities include assisting with office coverage, which involves computer work and collecting fees. The individual must be willing to adopt and demonstrate the City of Brownwood "I SERVE" Core Values.

  • 4) Perform manual labor as needed, including the use of hand and power tools;
  • 5) Maintain compliance with all applicable Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations;
  • 6) Recover refrigerants from white goods in accordance with EPA and TCEQ regulations;
  • 7) Perform routine and preventative maintenance on equipment, as well as minor repairs;
  • 8) Assist in extinguishing fires when necessary;
  • 9) Collect fees and direct vehicles to appropriate unloading areas;
  • 10) Read and interpret grade settings;
  • 11) Empty dumpsters using a roll-off truck;
  • 12) Process and sort recycling materials and prepare loads for shipping;
  • 13) Provide relief for both the recycling center and the scale house office;
  • 14) Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Must possess a valid Texas Driver License. Obtain a TCEQ Waste Screening Certification within 2 years.

Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language. A High School Diploma or G.E.D is preferred;experience is desired but not required, on the job training will be provided.

Must have working knowledge of landfill and/or recycling procedures. Ability to operate all equipment safely and properly. Ability to use a computer and operate programs such as Excel, Word, and other software as needed. Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly. Ability to accurately count cash and balance a cash drawer.

Work is performed outdoors in adverse weather and in environments with noise, odors, dust, and dirt. Duties involve strenuous activity requiring moderate to heavy physical labor, including repetitive operation of vehicles and equipment. The position involves exposure to hazards such as inclement weather, machinery, chemicals, materials discarded in containers, and work near electrical lines.

Requires the ability to sit, stand, and drive to various worksites. Employees are exposed to seasonal temperatures and both mechanical and chemical hazards while performing maintenance tasks. Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds and perform bending, stooping, walking, sweeping, digging, and pushing brooms. Must be able to communicate effectively—both verbally and in writing—with the public, including interacting with individuals who may be difficult. Ability to understand written and spoken instructions is essential. Occasional work beyond 40 hours per week, including holidays and weekends, may be required.
