Clayton County, Georgia is seeking a Landfill Equipment Operator to operate a range of equipment at the county landfill, including compactors, dump trucks, dozers, and loaders, to manage waste and support daily operations.
Responsibilities include building and maintaining roads and drainage structures, covering waste with soil, and performing routine preventive maintenance. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, CDL, and inmate supervision certification within six months.
LANDFILL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Operates equipment at the County landfill. Compacts, moves, and covers solid waste; maintains related drainage structures.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Inspects and operates varied equipment at the County landfill including compactors, dump trucks, dozers, track hoes, motor graders, loaders, tractors, bin trucks, skid steers, balers, etc. Compacts solid waste, grades landfill slopes, loads dirt, hauls materials, etc. Constructs and maintains roads, ditches, sediment ponds, and berms throughout landfill and surrounding area; ensures proper slopes, grades to allow for adequate drainage and run off. Loads, hauls, and deposits dirt to cover solid waste; sows and maintains grass in designated areas. Performs routine preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as fueling, topping of fluids, cleaning and greasing.
Picks up litter and debris from landfill roads and other areas not designated for dumping. Supervisees inmate labor. Performs other related duties as required.
High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one (1) year of experience operating equipment in a landfill preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Experience with landfill equipment preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Inmate supervision certification required within six (6) months.
Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, and toxic agents.
