Job summary

Venable LLP's Land Use & Zoning Practice Group seeks a Land Use Planner with experience to join the Tysons, VA or Washington, D.C. office.

The role involves analyzing land use plans, creating development proposals, processing zoning permits, and coordinating with clients on land conversions. Primary responsibilities include due diligence, entitlement applications, collaboration with Real Estate attorneys, and interaction with local government staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in planning, environmental studies, or related discipline.
  • Five years of substantive experience in the applicable area of law.
  • Project management experience in both public and private sectors.
  • Prior planning experience with local government preferred but not required.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work with others.
  • Excellent writing/editing, research and analysis, communication, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills, with a strong work ethic.
  • Customer-service mindset and flexibility to work overtime and travel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze land use plans to ensure safety, efficiency, and environmental compliance.
  • Create development proposals, process zoning permits, and map land use logistics.
  • Interact with clients to decide land conversion for commercial or personal use.
  • Represent projects before local jurisdictions and assist with entitlement processes.
  • Collaborate with Real Estate attorneys on entitlement applications.
  • Review architectural and civil engineering designs with local government staff.
  • Guide production planning: schedules, forecasting trends and logistics.
  • Develop tools to conduct impact analysis on current or area plans.
  • Direct inbound or outbound logistics operations and coordinate meetings with executives.
