Furtado & Associates, Inc. in Seattle, WA is seeking a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT). You will work in the ROW Department under licensed surveyors or project managers to gain licensure and advance skills in boundary work, legal descriptions, and surveying documentation.

The position includes mentorship, exposure to transportation projects, and hands-on experience with CAD, Civil 3D, GIS, and data processing while contributing to plan reviews and boundary calculations.

Qualifications

• Degree in Land Surveying/Geomatics preferred.
• Passed the Fundamentals of Surveying exam.
• Registered or able to register as LSIT.
• High-level competence in land surveying principles; motivated and dependable.
• GPS experience is a plus; CAD experience a must.
• Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.

Furtado & Associates, Inc. (F&A) is a leading consulting engineering, land surveying and construction management firm in Seattle, WA. We are a small, privately held firm that works on transportation infrastructure projects throughout the Puget Sound area, including Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail Extensions and numerous projects for WSDOT and SDOT. Our busy office currently has an opportunity for a professional and experienced individual to fill the role of Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT). In this position you will be working within our ROW Department under one of our Licensed Surveyors or Project Managers. Job summary:

This position works directly with the professional land surveyor (PLS) assisting in performing quality review, preparing legal descriptions, title review, boundary calculations, processing data, research, and redlining exhibits. A PLS will review all final work done by the LSIT and will provide direction on corrections and mentorship on how to find the solution. Through this position one shall gain experience required to pass the necessary exams and pursue licensure as a professional land surveyor.

• Review legal exhibits and legal descriptions
• Review plans and specifications
• Preparation of plans using CADD
• Assist with preparing engineering/technical documents
• Searching legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain information about property boundaries in areas to be surveyed
• Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed
• Direct or conduct surveys to establish legal boundaries for properties, based on legal deeds and titles
• Write descriptions of property boundary surveys for use in deeds, leases, or other legal documents
• Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys
• Coordinate findings with the work of engineering personnel, clients, and others concerned with projects
• Analyze survey objectives and specifications to help prepare survey proposals
• Provide work to PLS for review and approval

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Degree in Land Surveying/Geomatics (preferred)
• Passed the Fundamentals of Surveying exam
• Registered or able to register as an LSIT
• Must have a high-level competence in land surveying principles and be highly motivated and dependable
• GPS experience is a plus
• CAD experience a must
• Must be able to perform job duties in various terrain and climates
• Ability to prepare maps, drawings, reports and exhibits from compiled field data and notes
• Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions and sketches
• Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D, Microsoft Word, Excel, and SharePoint programs.
• Ability to quickly learn other supporting software a plus
• Fundamental knowledge of engineering, land surveying or construction
• Coordinate calculations and translations

• Self-motivated, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and able to complete assignments quickly and in a timely fashion

Required Education and Experience:

Knowledge of: principles and practices of land surveying, including boundary determination, legal descriptions, construction, topographic surveying, and GIS; laws, rules, and regulations regarding subdivisions of land, boundary locations, mapping, and surveying practices, including the Professional Land Surveyor’s Act; principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as used in field survey analysis; technical report writing; experience using aerial images.

Ability to: assign, prioritize, schedule, and delegate work when asked; explain technical concepts to others; provide constructive feedback; direct, train, and evaluate the performance of staff; promote safety in all phases of our work; work independently; read and interpret engineering plans; collect, calculate, and adjust mathematical computations such as distances, traverses, and elevations; analyze data; operate and maintain personal computers; perform difficult algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and precise engineering calculations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with engineers, developers, clients, and the general public.
