About the Unit This position works in the Colorado Department of Transportations’ (CDOT’s) Right-of-Way Unit. The Unit is responsible for researching, appraising, acquiring, overseeing and surveying real estate. About the Position This Land Survey Technician position is based out of CDOT’s Grand Junction office and works under the direct supervision of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS). This position provides support as a field survey crew chief by setting up and operating highly technical survey equipment and utilizing survey software for establishment of primary project control, collecting topography data for roadway design and conducting field investigations for locating land and property corner evidence using CDOT’s Terrain Modeling Survey Software (TMOSS) format. This position also provides project management and office support in processing data collected in the field and assists in preparing maps, plans and documents. Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: Set up and operate Survey instruments including robotic total stations, data collectors, global positioning system (GPS) equipment and digital levels. Trains less experienced staff on the operation of this equipment. Understands and assists PLSI with survey datums and projections and utilizes that information in the field to obtain survey data tied to a control network. Collects topographic data for the preparation of topographical maps of highway lands and properties. Assist pilots with UAS data collection. Recognize safety hazards in and around high-volume traffic area and determine the safest way to proceed with field work using the most current CDOT Survey Manual and approved Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).Recognize and communicate concerns and issues to the PLSI or PLSII. Assure the reliability of field data by checking for errors in equipment settings, data transmission and data collection; Learns to operate computer software, including MicroStation, In Roads / Open Roads and Trimble Business Center to view and inspect Survey data, create topography (TMOSS) deliverables for roadway designers, calculate search data points for boundary location, and assist with ROW plans. Refer to Federal Government information and updates pertaining to Global Positioning Systems to ensure that GPS equipment is working properly when there are changes in transmission frequencies. Follow the CDOT Survey Manual requirements pertaining to the setting of project control monuments. ;Operates equipment to establish project control. Provide ROW information to CDOT employees and the public. Organize, sort, and archive survey documents, ROW plans, maps, title information, and field survey information ;Assist pilots with UAS data collection. Respond to requests for information from internal and external customers ;Perform all other duties and complete other projects as assigned or approved by the Region Right of Way Manager and Plans and Survey Coordinator, in a timely manner; Abide by all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required protective equipment. Work Environment: Primarily 7:00 am – 5:30 pm work hours, Monday-Thursday Travel required during work hours throughout CDOT’s Region 3Approximately 70% spent in the field, 30% spent in the office Anticipated 10% overnight travel throughout Region 3. Required to perform survey fieldwork over variable terrain, in all weather conditions, and to work in proximity to heavy traffic. Required to operate CDOT vehicles Exerts up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs regularly.
