Professional Coeur d'Alene, ID, US
Hecla Mining Company is seeking a Land Manager to take ownership of the administration and integrity of the Company’s surface and mineral land position across the United States and Canada.
Hecla is the largest primary silver producer in the United States and Canada, with a 135-year operating history and a portfolio that includes Greens Creek in Alaska, Lucky Friday in Idaho, and Keno Hill in the Yukon, alongside an active exploration and development pipeline. Every one of those assets rests on land and mineral title that has to be documented, current, and defensible.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President & General Counsel, the Land Manager is the Company’s point of accountability for land and mineral tenure. The role carries direct responsibility for ensuring that Hecla’s right to explore, develop, and mine every property in the portfolio is never put at risk by a missed filing, a lapsed claim, or an unresolved title gap. The Land Manager presents directly to the Board on holdings, obligations, and tenure risk as the subject matter warrants.
This is an individual contributor role today, with the opportunity to build and lead a small land team as the portfolio grows. Deployment of a dedicated digital land management platform is already underway. The Land Manager inherits a foundation in place and owns the implementation and the system from there.
WHAT YOU WILL MANAGE
Title and Tenure
Maintaining every holding in good standing, including unpatented BLM claims, patented claims (lode, placer, millsite), leasehold and fee interests across multiple western states, and exploration licenses and Crown land in the Yukon, along with the water rights that support those properties. Title research for acquisitions, chain-of-title construction across patented and unpatented instruments and severed estates, and identification of defects and curative requirements.
Obligations and Deadlines
A high-volume, multi-jurisdictional calendar of maintenance fees, rentals, property taxes, assessment filings, renewals, and notices, run with no gaps. This is the part of the job with no margin for error. The Land Manager also coordinates with Canadian land counsel and contract land professionals on Yukon and other Canadian filing obligations, and manages land access and stakeholder matters with private landowners, ranchers, and tribal and Indigenous entities.
Calculating, tracking, and auditing advance and production royalty obligations across the portfolio, which includes rates, step-downs, buy-down rights, and payment terms, and working with Accounting so payments go out correctly and on time. Tracking options, rights of first refusal, and back-in rights held by third parties that could affect Hecla’s ownership or operating position.
Land Data, Mapping & Systems
Maintaining the Company’s authoritative tenure datasets and producing the claim boundary, land status, and tenure maps that Exploration, Operations, management, and the Board rely on. Working with Exploration and Operations GIS resources and directing outside geospatial specialists where deeper analytical work is warranted. Administering the land management system, carrying the current implementation through, and keeping spatial and tabular records synchronized and audit ready.
Reporting & Budget
Preparing status reports on holdings, obligations, and tenure risk for management and Board review. Preparing and tracking the annual land budget, which sits within the Legal department budget, including filing fees, royalty payments, and contractor costs. Staying current on regulatory developments affecting mining tenure in BLM, USFS, state, and Yukon jurisdictions.
Transactions
Land and title due diligence for acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and financings, including data room coordination and negotiation support. Reviewing land-related sections of purchase, option, and royalty agreements alongside the General Counsel and Corporate Development. All work in this area is conducted with strict confidentiality regarding Hecla’s land position, exploration pipeline, and acquisition targets.
