Job Description
General Requirements:
- Practice safety rules.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Safe use of hand & power tools.
- Report to and assist immediate supervisor.
- Perform quality work as determined by project specifications.
- Accountable for all tools and materials at the end of your shift.
- Must work well as part of a team.
Functional Requirements:
- Measure distance from grade stakes.
- Drive stakes.
- Stretch tight line.
- Grade stacks from lumber for reuse.
- Level earth to fine grade specifications with shovel to assist in pipe laying, and preparing subgrades and other excavations.
- Direct other laborers in dumping concrete into forms.
- Erect shoring and braces and paint pipe joints with sealing compound.
- Assist in setting pumps and well-points.
- May assist heavy construction equipment operators in aligning and moving equipment such as cranes, power shovels, and backhoes, verifying grades, and signaling operators to adjust machines to conform to grade specifications.
- Direct truck drivers and scraper operators to dumping positions to maintain grades as directed by the Grading Foreman or Dumping Foreman.
- Work in a concrete paving crew, adding to or removing concrete in front of concrete finishing machines to meet the correct grade.
- Occasionally use small power tools.
- May work as lead man in a labor crew.
- Exercise independent judgment to plan routine work; accept responsibility for several phases and expedite work without needing instructions or explanations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualification Standards:
- Some industrial/construction/general labor experience.
- Post-offer drug/alcohol screening and physical evaluation.
- Complete a New Hire Quiz.
- Must not pose a direct threat to health or safety in the workplace.
- Meet job site safety requirements (e.g., clean shaven, long sleeves, steel toe boots, etc.).
- Use safety equipment as required (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, respirator, hearing protection, safety harness with lanyard, etc.).
Physical Requirements:
- Comply with the company’s drug and alcohol policy.
- Pass physical examinations as required pre-employment or during employment.
- Ability to climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding, stairways, etc.
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at heights and in confined spaces (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.).
- Carry up to 50 lbs. of tools/materials; seek assistance for heavier items.
- Stand or walk for extended periods.
- Work on uneven surfaces for long hours.
- Work while wearing respirators and PPE when required.
Work Environment:
- Location: industrial construction sites and/or fabrication shops.
- Mobility barriers: uneven ground, obstructed pathways, work at low/high elevations, confined spaces.
- Climatic conditions: outdoor environments, extreme hot/cold, humidity, rain, noise, potential chemical exposure.
