Job Summary

The Laborer - Prep Crew is responsible for providing essential support to the paving team by assisting in various tasks related to the preparation, placement, and finishing of asphalt surfaces. This position ensures a clean, safe, and organized work environment, while contributing to the efficiency and quality of paving operations. Union membership is required for this position. Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing the job site by clearing debris, marking areas for paving, and ensuring the surface is ready for asphalt application.
• Safely transport and handle materials such as asphalt, aggregate, and sand to the paving crew, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
• Maintain clear and effective communication with crews and other team members to ensure smooth operations and quickly address any concerns or issues that arise.
• Operate hand tools and small machinery (e.g., shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows) to assist with the placement, leveling, and compaction of asphalt.
• Ensure that work areas are kept clean and organized by removing excess materials and debris to maintain a safe working environment.
• Strictly adhere to all safety protocols and regulatory guidelines to promote a safe working environment for all personnel.
  
  

Other Required Duties And Responsibilities

• May be asked to assist with operating small paving equipment or learning to operate heavier equipment such as skid steer loaders, rollers, or pavers.
• Will occasionally fill in for the Flaggers on the job sites.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently throughout the workday.
• Willingness to work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rainy conditions.
• The role may require working outside regular business hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate project schedules.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and kneel for extended periods during the workday.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisors to ensure the successful completion of the paving project.
  
  

Skills/Abilities

• Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record. A CDL or the willingness to obtain one is preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
• Must maintain professional relationships with managers and colleagues.
• Represent The Gerken Companies to customers in a professional manner, supporting the company's goals.
• Willingness to learn, with a positive attitude, dependability, and strong teamwork.
• Ability to work safely and efficiently is essential.
  
  

Education and Experience

• Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school is required.
• Mechanical Skills are not required but are beneficial to this position.
