Job Description

This is a manual labor position performing unskilled and semi-skilled tasks, often of a physically demanding nature. Work may be assigned in various areas including Highways, Water/Sewer, Parks, Cemetery, Traffic, Fleet Maintenance, or other union-represented departments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds repeatedly for a full shift.
  • State of Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License, a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain it throughout employment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands and environment are representative of those encountered while performing essential job functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Work includes travel within the city, working outdoors at field sites, visiting construction sites with uneven terrain, and exposure to fumes, dust, chemicals, loud machinery, and other hazards. Employees must have the strength, stamina, and coordination to access sites, observe work, and operate tools. Exposure to adverse weather, loud noises, mechanical parts, dust, and fumes is possible. The noise level varies from quiet to loud depending on the situation.

Communication and Physical Requirements

Employees are frequently required to communicate in person, via phone, or radio, and to lift/move moderate to heavy items.

Evaluation and Medical Requirements

Applicants must undergo a post-offer medical examination, including a physical and drug screening, before employment begins. A criminal background check may also be conducted. Successful completion of a probationary period is required for permanent employment.
