Job summary

The City of Dallas is seeking a Laborer I to perform a variety of unskilled and manual labor tasks across city facilities, streets, parks and utilities. You will assist in maintenance, repair, and operations, including groundskeeping, piping work, and basic construction tasks.

Essential functions cover concrete and asphalt work, equipment operation, traffic safety, drainage maintenance, and routine cleaning of public spaces.

Qualifications

• General mechanical knowledge and aptitude necessary to perform a variety of unskilled labor.
• Ability to learn to use hand/power tools and other equipment specific to various trades.
• Ability to perform manual labor.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.

Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of low-skilled and unskilled strenuous labor assisting in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of streets, storm drains, sewer lines; maintenance and repair of airport grounds and facilities; construction and maintenance of water/wastewater mains; cleaning water meters.
• Operates tractors, mowers, and other lawn equipment; maintains public facilities, lakes, zoo, aquarium and park grounds; collects garbage/brush and trims landscape.
• Assists in setting forms, mixing and pouring concrete, spreading and laying asphalt or crack seal for sidewalks and streets; assists in laying pipes for storm or sanitary sewers and water mains.
• Loads and unloads tools and material; drives equipment to the work site and performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Flags traffic, sets barricades and safety devices to protect crew and public.
• Digs ditches and trenches; trims, shovels, and cleans debris; assists in drainage work and maintaining public spaces.
• Cuts grass, removes litter and weeds; cleans floors and grounds to maintain facility upkeep.
• Performs any and all other trades work as needed or assigned.

Overview

The Laborer I performs and provides various un-skilled and semi-skilled manual labor assisting in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of utilities, facilities, airport grounds, water and wastewater mains, landscaping, park grounds, and other public spaces.

Essential Functions

• 1 Performs skilled and un-skilled strenuous labor for various departments; participates in the maintenance, care, repair, and operations of facilities, utilities, public spaces, and landscaping for the City; perform a variety of labor for different departments.
• 2 Assists in setting forms, mixing and pouring concrete, spreading and laying asphalt or spreading crack seal for the maintenance and repair of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters or streets; assists in laying various pipes for storm or sanitary sewers, drains or water mains to ensure proper flow is maintained.
• 3 Loads and unloads tools, construction material, and equipment onto trucks to ensure necessary tools are available for repairs to be made.
• 4 Operates air/jack hammer to break out old concrete or asphalt when making repairs; drives dump truck, tractor driven mowers, or other equipment to transport tools, equipment, supplies, or material to and from the work site; performs preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operating conditions.
• 5 Flags traffic, sets out barricades, cones or other safety devices to help ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
• 6 Digs ditches and trenches grading to specific evaluation; trims, shovels, cuts, and cleans up debris and removes vegetation; assists in cleaning drainage ditches, inlets, storm drains and sewer lines using various power operated equipment to remove debris or stoppage.
• 7 Cuts grass, removes litter and weeds, cleans floors and facility grounds to maintain upkeep of facility, street medians, and vacant lots removing any hazards and ensuring safety of tenants.
• 8 Performs any and all other trades work as needed or assigned.
