Valid TWIC card required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Report to the Gang Foreman to obtain schedule and work instructions.
- Longshore in hold may be required to communicate via handheld radio.
- Handle tools and/or lashing materials as needed.
- Place or remove dunnage, including but not limited to under blades, buckets, or other attachments that rest on the transport surface.
- Remain clear of all suspended loads during loading and discharge operations.
- Use a push broom to sweep discarded materials to the designated area.
- Use locking poles to disengage locks at corners of containers.
- Place deck shoes (4-4.8 lbs.) on the vessel floor to sit containers on.
- Hook and unhook lifting gear as required.
- Understand the fundamentals of rigging and slinging.
- Utilize rigging/slinging to load and unload containers, steel commodities, project cargo, and bulk materials.
- Operate forklifts safely.
- Dismantle and store rigging/slinging equipment after use.
- Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety.
- Know and use crane hand signals.
- Follow all safety guidelines diligently.
Vessel Access
- Climb up or down the gangway to access the vessel (46–60 steps; varies depending on vessel height and water level). Handrails are located on each side of the gangway at waist height.
- Climb vertical ladders aboard the vessel.
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required.
Required Safety Gear to be worn at all times:
- Safety vest, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, and hard hats must be worn on the terminal or in the yard.
