Job summary

Southland Construction seeks a Grade Crew Laborer to support a grading crew on heavy civil projects. You will assist with grading, earthwork, and material handling while following safety policies.

Qualifications

• Experience in grading or heavy civil construction preferred but not required.
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding work.
• Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Reliable transportation to and from job sites.
• Willingness to work overtime and weekends as needed.
• OSHA 10 certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist equipment operators with site grading and earthwork activities.
• Perform hand grading using shovels, rakes, and other hand tools.
• Set and remove grade stakes, string lines, and markers.
• Check grades using laser levels, grade rods, and measuring tapes.
• Load, unload, and distribute construction materials and equipment.
• Dig trenches and assist with utility installation as directed.
• Compact soil using hand-operated compactors.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area.
• Direct equipment operators using hand signals when necessary.
• Perform daily maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
• Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and PPE requirements.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Foreman or Superintendent.

A Grade Crew Laborer works with a grading crew to prepare construction sites for roads, bridges, utilities, and other heavy civil projects. The position supports equipment operators by performing manual labor, checking grades, and ensuring the site is ready for construction activities.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist equipment operators with site grading and earthwork activities.
• Perform hand grading using shovels, rakes, and other hand tools.
