Laborer

Position Summary
The Laborer performs a variety of manual labor tasks in support of road maintenance, construction, and other public works projects. This position requires physical stamina, adaptability, and the ability to work in various outdoor conditions. We are seeking a motivated individual who is eager to learn, grow, and develop new skills within the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at assigned work sites.
- Work a minimum of 40 hours per week, with availability for emergency on-call duty 24/7.
- Perform general manual labor tasks as assigned by supervisory staff.
- Transport materials and equipment between projects and tasks as needed.
- Assist equipment operators by aligning and guiding heavy machinery during operations.
- Provide direction to truck drivers regarding dumping locations and logistics.
- Participate in road maintenance activities such as asphalt patching, paving, mowing, clearing debris, and installing or replacing culverts (tinhorns).
- Assist in the installation, replacement, and maintenance of county road signs.
- Willingness to undergo training and learn new tasks to support team operations and long-term development within the district.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Ability to safely and effectively operate equipment as required.
- Eagerness to learn new skills and take part in on-the-job training.
- Strong work ethic and interest in long-term growth within the department.
- Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and be insurable under the County’s policy.
Education and Experience
- Less than a high school diploma required;
- OR equivalent combination of education and up to one month of related work experience or training.
Licenses and Certifications
- A standard Oklahoma Driver’s License is required to be considered for this position.
Skills
- Language Skills: Ability to read and understand basic instructions and memos.
- Math Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and understand measurements related to weight, volume, and distance.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out one- or two-step instructions and handle routine situations.
Physical Demands
This job requires frequent physical activity, including but not limited to:
- Standing, walking, lifting (up to 100 lbs.), climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and using hands and arms.
- Working in physically demanding environments such as uneven terrain, roadside ditches, and under various weather conditions.
- Vision requirements include close, peripheral, and depth perception with the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
The role involves regular exposure to:
- Outdoor elements (heat, cold, rain, etc.), dust, fumes, and vibration.
- Moving mechanical parts and occasionally hazardous conditions (chemicals, high places, electrical risks).
- The work environment is typically loud and fast-paced.
Safety
Employees must follow all Canadian County safety policies and procedures. Any safety incidents, accidents, or concerns should be reported to the supervisor immediately during the same shift.
