Job summary

SMS group USA is seeking a Laborer to provide general shop support, including material handling, shipping, and maintenance. The role requires reliability, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently while supporting multiple areas of the business.

The successful candidate will operate forklifts and cranes, perform basic measurements, and assist with various departments. A valid driver’s license and DOT certification are required or obtainable.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform general labor duties throughout the facility with safety and efficiency.
  • Maintain focus and initiative while supporting daily shop operations.
  • Assist with material handling including loading, unloading, staging, and organizing materials.
  • Safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead cranes, and rigging equipment as required.
  • Perform crane operations and proper rigging to move equipment and materials.
  • Prepare materials and equipment for shipment, including staging and securing loads.
  • Maintain shop organization and proper storage of materials and tools.
  • Support multiple departments and operational areas as needed.
  • Operate basic shop equipment (e.g., mag drill, band saw, drill press, etc.).
  • Use hand and power tools safely to complete tasks.
  • Take basic measurements with tape measures, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Assist with minor repairs: plumbing, water softener maintenance, safety line painting.
  • Maintain knowledge of customer equipment and materials in the shop.
  • Complete daily housekeeping and waste removal tasks.
  • Assist with winter duties: snow removal and salting of walkways.
  • Operate company vehicles with valid license and DOT compliance.
  • Complete shipping and shop paperwork per ISO standards.

Job description

Position Summary

The Laborer is responsible for providing general shop support to maintain safe, efficient, and productive operations throughout the SMS group facility. This position performs a variety of tasks including material handling, shipping support, housekeeping, equipment operation, facility maintenance, and production assistance. The successful candidate must demonstrate reliability, strong work ethic, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work independently while supporting multiple areas of the business.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform general labor duties throughout the facility while working safely and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain focus, productivity, and initiative while completing assigned tasks and supporting daily shop operations.
  • Assist with material handling activities including loading, unloading, staging, organizing, and moving materials throughout the facility.
  • Safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment as required.
  • Perform crane operations and proper rigging techniques to safely move equipment, components, and materials.
  • Prepare materials and equipment for shipment, including staging, banding, shrink wrapping, and securing loads as required.
  • Maintain organization of the shop by properly storing materials, keeping like items together, and utilizing shelving and designated storage areas when available.
  • Support various departments and operational areas including painting, segments, molds, zones, roll shop, commercial areas, and other assigned locations.
  • Operate basic shop equipment including, but not limited to:
    • Mag drill
    • Hydraulic tubing bender
    • Automatic band saw
    • Automatic tapping machine
    • Pipe threader
    • Drill press
    • Stingray washer
    • Cardinal blast cabinet
  • Utilize hand tools, power tools, and other miscellaneous equipment safely and effectively to complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform basic measurements using tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring devices as required.
  • Assist with minor repairs and general maintenance throughout the facility, including:
    • Basic plumbing repairs
    • Water softener maintenance
    • Painting safety lines, walkways, and designated safety areas
    • Other facility improvement tasks as assigned
  • Maintain knowledge of customer equipment, components, and materials throughout the shop.
  • Complete daily housekeeping responsibilities including:
    • Shop cleaning
    • Trash and waste removal
    • Restocking refrigerators and supplies
    • Maintaining rag and oil dry containers
    • General workplace organization
  • Assist with snow removal, salting, and maintaining safe walkways, entrances, and exterior areas during winter conditions.
  • Operate company vehicles as needed while maintaining a valid driver's license and required DOT certification.
  • Successfully complete company driving requirements and safely secure loads when transporting materials.
  • Complete required documentation accurately, including travelers, timecards, shipping documents, and other shop paperwork in accordance with ISO standards and SMS group policies.

  • Previous experience in an industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, or construction environment preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead cranes, and rigging equipment or obtain required certifications.
  • Valid state‑issued driver's license required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOT certification for company vehicle operation.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, quality, and teamwork.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment safely.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work around industrial equipment, noise, dust, and other manufacturing‑related conditions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
